Men vs. Women - Who is More Flexible?

Who's more flexible, men or women? If you’ve often wondered why women are rumored to be more flexible, and you want to improve your own flexibility – whatever your sex – this video is for you.

In a room of 50 men and 50 women, the women, on average, would demonstrate greater range of motion. Men have much higher levels of both testosterone and growth hormones, leading to higher levels of muscle mass, and if flexibility is not trained, more mass usually does correlate with reduced range of motion. But for average people who simply want to regain basic range of motion (BROM) to touch their toes, squat down, or sit cross legged comfortably, this is a non-issue. Both men and women have the capacity for huge flexibility gains.

The Science of Stretching is a targeted approach to flexibility training designed to restore basic range of motion in anybody, at any age, and is based on over a hundred years of fitness-based yoga practices and dozens of published studies in exercise physiology. In this video I’ll reveal the key principles of practice and how you can use them to significantly improve your flexibility. Let’s get started!

VIDEO CONTENTS
00:00 Male v female flexibility
03:01 BROM
03:37 How flexibility works
03:55 Science of Stretching principles
04:00 Wet noodle
04:28 Breathe to relax
05:36 Time under passive tension
06:45 Supported forward fold

DISCLAIMER – this approach should not be used for warmup or preparatory stretch routines. The ideal time for deep, passive stretching is after exercise (never before) or before bed as the practice can make you sleepy.

WHAT IS BASIC RANGE OF MOTION (BROM)?
Imagine a healthy 12-year-old playing in the park with friends. They can get up and down from the floor with ease, perform a full squat, and sit comfortably cross-legged. These simple, natural movement patterns are often lost as we age and as we fall into the trap of a sedentary lifestyle. This affects both men and women.

Consistency in stretching is the key to increasing your mobility over time. Unlike strength training, where rest days are crucial, your body adapts best to stretching when done consistently, ideally daily.

SCIENCE OF STRETCHING PRINCIPLES WE'LL LEARN
1) Wet noodle
2) Breathe to relax
3) Time under passive tension

I'm really grateful that Lucas's 21 Day Hip Challenge popped up on my Instagram feed awhile back. I've gone through that class more or less (probably more towards less LOL) twice, and I keep returning to his teaching style because it is so accessible, well articulated and - best of all - there is ZERO judgement. Even when I've gone weeks without doing any flexibility practice, I can almost hear Lucas's voice in my head saying, "Hey - that's ok. How about trying again today?" Thank you so much, Lucas!

Good suggestions for testing where I'm at, how to optimize training, and ease into greater flexibility.

Lucas I love your videos. I learn so much. Currently working on your back challenge - definitely going to have to repeat but loving the challenge. Most of my problem is strength issues as my pt people say I am "too" flexible.

I searched it and it says: In general, women are typically more naturally flexible than men. Part of this is because of the makeup of their connective tissues

In my ytt I learned how height or being taller can make you less flexible because your hamstrings are tighter from being longer. I’m a woman but I’m 6’ tall and it was validating that it’s not just my busted body lol. I haven’t taught in 3 years due to RA and two other autoimmune diseases. Do you have stretch suggestions for the outside of my hips? Frog and figure four aren’t working

I do have a random question for ya. When you're stretching are you actively trying keep your back straight or really just not moving past a point where your back starts to curve? I feel like when I'm stretching sometimes i can keep my back straight and sometimes i cant. For example, if I'm just standing and hinge at my hips i can get pretty far down and have a curve in my back. But if i do a pancake and fold down, my back curves so easily compared to my flexibility when doing other types of movement. I would say I'm generally pretty flexible. I'm 22 and a dancer as well so i go through my range of motion even towards the ends of range of motion very regularly but my back (and also my hamstrings) have always been something that are to be left desired. Any thoughts. Oh i also went to a chiropractor awhile back and they said that i visibly have a lot of tension in my lower back 🤷🏾‍♂️.

I love it the principal is very helpful to my clients who get tense after I have finished my yoga classes with Lucas's teacher I talked to them for practice when I had a hands-on medical massage to the injured areas of chronic pain. But anyway I am making a video for my clients to practice yoga with props to help my clients get flexibility in living it well. Thank you, Yoga body 🙏👍❤

did anyone else notice that he must have used some video/photo editing program to make his face a woman's face. The nose is exactly the same in the thumbnail.

I thought you would mention pelvis differences and tolerance to pain

I've been meditating for 20 years, let me tell you, I still doubt I can someday sit full lotus position. the best I can get is a quarter lotus, and struggling a bit with half lotus. I looked for different ways to practice full lotus from many trainers on youtube, and not many works.

and how would you relate flexibility with personality?

I like your videos. But I wonder why the women graphic has women in dresses. I have never seen a woman in a dress in a yoga class. Why not have use a non-gendered graphic instead of falling into the stereotype? Just a suggestion.

That guy was not 300 pounds. More like 257, I think.
