Kingfisher chicks
And then there were two.. Kingfisher chicks hatch out featherless and helpless. In fact they look almost alien with dark wide spots where their eyes will be. They are unable to hold their heads, up - watch how the first chick rests on an egg for support - and are entirely dependent on their parents to keep them warm and feed them. They also tidy up!
Common kingfisher
This is a common kingfisher, a species widespread in Europe. The male and female share incubation duties and eggs are laid roughly every 24 hours, but the chicks all hatch on the same day.
Secret underground world
Kingfishers normally lay their eggs in underground nests, dug using their long beaks out of muddy river banks. I made an aritificial alternative, as close a replica to the bird's original design except with cameras hidden inside, and waited for a kingfisher pair to use it.
*ABOUT ME*
____________
I am a British wildlife artist and filmmaker on a mission to share my love for wildlife with the world. As well as creating detailed animal film and art portraits, I promote wildlife tours around the world and do all I can to help conserve and protect wildlife here at my home in Yorkshire. I hope that by putting nature in the frame I can foster a deep love for wildlife amongst my followers.
