How long does it take to learn Ruby on Rails?

Ruby on Rails is certainly going to take more time than learning HTML.

HTML is probably one of the easiest languages to learn, like over a long weekend.

With HTML5, CSS and code modules in HTML5, it takes closer to a week.

How long does it take to learn Ruby on Rails?

People used to read the Ruby on Rails text books on route to California hoping to work for Silicon Valley.

So how long does it take to really learn it?

There’s a blog on The Next Web on how to learn it in three hours, but that’s more an intro to his class.

That’s more like the three hours a week for a semester to learn something than actually learning it in three weeks. That’s like learning hello, how are you, where’s the bathroom in Spanish and saying you know the basics.

James Fend says he learned Ruby on Rails in twelve weeks of self study fast enough to program whole projects in it. But he already had a good understanding of object oriented programming and good programming practices.

What’s the difference?

If you already know French, you’ll learn Spanish verb structures and male and female adjectives faster than if you speak English.

How long does it take for everyone else?

From a state of ignorance, I would say a couple hours a day for a few months might give you a good foundation. It might take a year or so to be good enough to actually get paid to work in it.

There’s a saying that you have to work 10,000 hours at something to get good at it.

That’s the beauty of code libraries and object oriented programming – you only need a thousand hours to get good at assembling the code other people created and testing the stuff to make sure it works.
