Hey, it's Mayim, and today we're cooking latkes! Hanukkah starts this Sunday night, and that means we Jews will be cooking up a lotta latkes. Here's how I make mine! Plus, I show you a few ways to spice up and modernize a regular latke into something millennials (or lots of other people) will love. How do you like your latkes? Let me know!

About Mayim Bialik:
You might know me as Amy Farrah Fowler from The Big Bang Theory or from Blossom but there are so many other parts of me that you might not be aware of! I’m trained as a neuroscientist, I'm a passionate activist, an observant Jew, a perfectly imperfect mother, and I'm a complicated human being like many of you. This is the place where I wear all of those hats - and none of them have a flower on them! ;)

I love that you don't have a typical over the top celebrity house, you seem to have a normal human house. Its refreshing.

Growing up shredding potatoes and dicing onions with Mom & Daddy was always a favorite childhood memory. We'd sing songs and they'd tell us stories, and we'd talk scripture and history and just whatever we wanted. I can't even count the hours we'd spend every year as a family making our latkes. This was awesome to see cuz it's like sharing this kinda memory-making magic with everyone in the world!

Instead of using paper bags or towels to drain them, I have a splatter screen that I put over the pan during cooking. I take the latkes out of the pan and put them on top of the screen. That lets the oil drain back into the pan and keeps the latke warm.

My Nana used to make them, and taught me when I was still way to young to have been cooking but hey, it was the seventies. She passed on years ago but I could almost hear her shouting "From a PACKET? Mayim!". You are so funny, Mayim. Thanks for bringing my Nana back from the dead (almost) lol x

So basically, we have Hanukkah LATKAS almost everyday in India. 😂 preparation is so similar to many many food items that we have in India.
Love from India. AmyLove.

A chive is an herb, a scallion is an onion. Chives have a beautiful purple flower and they grow in a bunch. Loving the latkas. Happy Hanukkah :)

Omg! My father in law brought his own little food processor with him and made them all the time! I especially remember he made them for our very simple wedding reception. It was a small family wedding and he cooked. He was trying them up and my Mom was polishing them off as fast as he took them out to the point he said, "June, stop eating the latkes!" I miss he and my Mother in Law so much. Messy is best! I am too! Sometimes when you 're busy hard to keep all neat! Love your videos!

it`s so surprising how Jewish traditional recepies are similar to our culture. i am from Lithuania, north-east Europe, right next to Poland, we call those LATKE Bulviniai blynai, leterally potatoe pancace, served with sour cream, cottage cheese and garlic, or with sour plum jam. jummy childhood comfort food

Just for scientific accuracy: Chives are not "baby scallions", they're a different species: Both are of the genus Allium, but Chives are A. schoenoprasum, whereas Scallion refers to several other A. species, like A. cepa (which is also the "regular" onion) or A. fistulosum. And to add some personal experience, my grandma grew both in her garden and chives never turned into scallions when she forgot to pick them ;)

p.S. Love you, Mayim. Happy Hanukkah!

Oh my goodness I love this video! We are not Jewish but started celebrating Hanukkah about 3 years ago at an event in our city. My daughter asked if we could celebrate the holiday after learning about it at school. We learned about the history and celebrate it every year now so the traditions are very new to us. We missed the event this year so we will recount the Hanukkah story and I will celebrate at home with my children. They look forward to this every year now. I hope this does not offend you but as Christians we believe we serve the same God. I grew up watching your show and loved it. From my family to yours. 💗💗 Alicia

My aunt makes a huge meal every year on Chanukah, and she makes about 5 different types of latkes (sort of latkes. We call it לביבות in Hebrew, and it refers to latkes, but also latkes with cheese instead of potatoes). She made this amazing sort of latkes with apples, pears and white chocolate. It was amazing and definitely worth a try!
