Dead Sea 101 - How Big Is Dead Sea Actually?
Показать описание
The Dead Sea, a landlocked salt lake situated in southwestern Asia, on the borders of Israel, Palestine and Jordan. The dead sea lies in the jordan Rift valley, on the tectonic plate boundary of the African Plate and The Arabian Plate.
The dead sea main northern basin has a total surface area of 605 square kilometers, with a water volume of 114 cubic kilometers. The Dead Sea is the lowest body of water on the surface of Earth. The lake surface is situated roughly 430 meters below the sea level, making it the lowest point on earth, the lake itself is 306 meters deep, which makes its deepest point nearly 736 meters below sea level. The lake main northern basin measures roughly 50 kilometres long, and up to 15 kilometres wide.
The Dead Sea is fed mainly by the Jordan River, which enters the lake from the north. Several smaller streams also drain into the sea. the lake has no outlets and is completely LANDLOCKED, the only way that water leaves is through evaporation. This makes the dead sea, one of the Saltiest Bodies of Water On Earth. Salinity is usually measured as salt particles per thousand grams of water. Average salinity of the world oceans is 35 parts per thousand, meanwhile The Dead Sea has a salinity of 340 parts per thousand, Nearly 9. 7 times that of the oceans. Due to Dead Sea’s high salt levels, people can easily float on its surface due to its natural buoyancy.
Due to large-scale projects by Israel and Jordan, to divert water from the Jordan River for irrigation and other water needs, the water levels of the Dead Sea has been dropping dangerously for the past 50 years. Over the last fifty years, the Dead Sea has lost a third of its surface area and every year its water level declines by about 1 point 1 meters. Due to the continuous fall in water levels during the mid 1970s, a stretch of dry land emerged in the Dead Sea, which divided the Dead Sea into two parts, a northern deepwater basin and a much shallower southern basin. The Northern basin is what we can say , as the true dead sea.
