Today we’re going to cover the difference between the two forms of vitamin B3: niacin and niacinamide.

Both niacin and niacinamide chemically work similarly but have different benefits.

Niacin:
• Gives a flushing response
• Has lipid benefits
• Helps lower cholesterol
• Helps lower LDL
• Helps increase HDL
• Helps decrease inflammation in the arteries
• Supports a healthy liver
• May help with schizophrenia
• May help with drug-induced dyskinesia

Niacinamide:
• Won’t cause a flush
• Helps with certain skin conditions (acne, dermatitis, rosacea, and psoriasis)
• Helps lower histamines
• Helps reduce immune inflammatory factors
• Helps decrease flaking skin
• Helps reduce sebum
• May help reduce inflammation
• May help with arthritis
• Is used for anti-aging
• Is used for hyperpigmentation
• May help reduce anger and anxiety

Many people are discouraged from taking niacin because of potential side effects. But the dangers are rare and are typically involved in those taking very high doses over long periods and time-release niacin.

Over the past few years, my health condition has become more and more complicated. From digestive problems, high blood pressure, complete exhaustion, inexplicable pain and more. I went for various examinations, but nothing was found. I had a dream about a month ago. I was in the clinic and explained to the doctor that I drink a lot of water. She replied that I should take niacin. I admit that I didn't know what it was until then. I've been taking 500g a day for three weeks now and my condition has really improved a lot. All my thanks go to Jesus. I asked him for help.

Dr. Berg, I've lost 67lbs(now at 181lbs), but more importantly, by listening to your advice I have gained discipline and am now experimenting with the intensity levels of Intermittent Fasting and Keto. All the while I've been loosing about 5lbs a month.. It's been effortless, just had to educate myself on Insulin Resistance and the rest has taken care of itself

Thank you, Dr . Berg
Just want to point out that we Mexicans still eat corn that has been soaked or heated in water + lime (i don't mean "lime" like a lemon)...
The tradition to make the original Mexican staple food known as: la tortilla can be confusing, because in Southern USA people call the flat bread made from wheat flour: tortilla.
Most fundamentally, the corn-based tortilla is made from "nixtamal" as written in Spanish. Nixtamal is the dough, corn treated with live lime overnight. But nixtamal is also used to make tamales, enchiladas, sopes, tostadas, tacos, quesadillas (originally meaning "folded tortilla"), and fried turnovers (not made with wheat flour).
Just like wheat flour combined with some sort of fat produces a fibrous dough, similarly: corn flour combined with live lime produces a fibrous dough. Both are doughs that can be easily worked or molded into food items.
Perhaps the advantage of flat bread, whether made from wheat, or from corn, is that no yeast is added in order to fluff it up?
Seems like my body benefits from staying away from bread that contains yeast.

Does that make sense? :)

Thanks to Dr. Berg. I have high cholesterol and LDL. I have been taking 100mg of Niacin. I don’t really experience the flush too much but I noticed that I experience itchiness for about 15-20minutes. It’s manageable though. I take it before I ho to bed. After 3 months, I’ll have another blood test and see if there is really a difference.😊 will update everyone on YT.

UPDATE 3.2.23 : Started taking 200mg Niacin before bedtime 3 days ago and the itching and redness were more evident. It’s quite uncomfortable but after 30 mins, the feeling subsides. I’m thinking I should probably go back to 100mg first until my next blood test by the end of the month.

UPDATE 6.6.23 : As promised, here is my latest update. After about 3 months of taking 200mg of Niacin, I have good news!!! Here’s a comparison from my 2 blood test results:

Cholesterol LDL
JAN 7 2023. 253.67 178.76
JUNE 6 2023. 211.20 136.68

I could not believe how effective Niacin is!!! I really didn’t want to take statins because of its side effects. I’m so happy with the results!

I hope my experience help others as well. Thank you, Dr. Berg!!!

I take both niacin and niacinamide. Niacinamide as a stand-alone. Niacin in both my multivitamin and my super B-complex vitamin. Taking both forms of B-3 was purely by accident. Now I know why I feel so much more relaxed and my dermatitis is now under control.

One of the last doctors I saw about my gut issues did not even listen to me about my current health issues. After discussing my gut, the narrowing of my blood vessels, chronic joint pain and fatigue, he prescribe me Meloxicam. I was there for my gut and told him I was using alternative methods to try and control my pain in my joints. I haven’t gone back and am not taking the Meloxicam, especially if you need to have blood test to monitor your health with that drug.

Anyhow I’m am gaining ground daily with my diet, vitamin and minerals I have research from your sight. I’m not going to lie, it isn’t easy to always eat clean even without the cravings especially when you’re and emotional eater and have been eating crap most your life. As a matter of fact, the old food really does taste like crap to me now!

Niacin and niacinamide are two forms of vitamin B3, which is an essential nutrient that plays an important role in many processes in the body, including energy production and DNA repair. While they are chemically similar, there are some important differences between niacin and niacinamide.

One key difference is their effect on the body's blood vessels. Niacin is known to cause a dilation of blood vessels, which can lead to a sensation of warmth and flushing of the skin, sometimes called the "niacin flush". This effect is thought to be beneficial for cardiovascular health, as it can help to lower blood pressure and improve blood flow.

In contrast, niacinamide does not have this effect on blood vessels and does not cause flushing. However, niacinamide has been shown to have its own unique health benefits. It has been found to be effective in treating a variety of skin conditions, such as acne, rosacea, and hyperpigmentation. It also has anti-inflammatory properties and has been studied for its potential to help manage conditions such as osteoarthritis and inflammatory bowel disease.

So, while both niacin and niacinamide are forms of vitamin B3 and have some overlapping health benefits, they do have some distinct differences in their effects on the body.

Did alot of research on niacin and niacinamide years ago. My daughter's diet is not the best and she gets anxiety, quite badly sometimes. If she takes niacinamide every day, she calms right down.

My father was a Japanese prisoner of war in ww2. He was nearly 6ft tall and 15 stone when he was caught but was 6½ stone when he left the prison. He had severe malnutrition and lost all his teeth. He saw so many horrors and was very anxious at times. Sadly, we only realised too late that he had pellagra. He lived to be 95yrs but we could have made such a difference to his quality of life x

Thank you for clarifying the differences. Following your previous video I bought Niacin.
I don’t take statins as I had terrible side effects from three different statin types the Doctor prescribed. Consequently my cholesterol is sky high.
I started taking Niacin as you recommended and have had no side effects whatsoever. Those horrid little yellow spots on my eye lid are slowly decreasing.
When I have my yearly blood test later this year I will let you know how effective taking Niacin is.
Thank you for your advice, kind regards Sally, 😊👏🇬🇧

Dr. Berg. I have to share that I am so glad I found my way to this episode. As an athlete, still playing basketball, tennis and snowboarding while in my late 50s, I have the wounds of an aging athlete. That said, I cannot believe how much better I've slept and felt upon awakening by following your recommendation on Niacinamide. The first morning I definitely felt different getting out of bed, and I am now in day 3 and feel so amazing that it's clear I must have been very verydeficient. Thank you so much for doing this episode.

I always feel happier after I take niacin. I love it. This is my husband's go to vitamin for anything. He believes it is a cure for almost anything. Gets a cold takes niacin and various other things. I use it for headaches. I take it regularly, but only after eating. Made the mistake of taking it without food and that was terrible for my stomach.

This is purely anecdotal, but after having a small squamous cell carcinoma removed from my forearm, my dermatologist recommended two 1000 mg tablets of niacinamide daily, which I took for about two years. You didn't touch on recommended dosage, but this amount I was taking is 62 times the RDA as I understand it. I am older, in my early seventies, and thinning of the skin comes with the territory, but I noticed even the slightest brush with a thorn or small limb would result in bleeding, and any significant contact with an object with my hand or arm resulted in an almost immediate bruising. I also noticed an increase in heart rate. I recently took myself off the niacinamide and noticed these symptoms disappear in a matter of days. From the "for what it's worth" department....

When I started taking Niacin, I thought there must have accidentally been gluten in something I ate. Seemed like an allergic reaction. When I realized it was just the Niacin flush and came to understand that it's a beneficial reaction, I just take it after my evening meal and don't worry about the flush.

Something you hinted at is the principle of effective dose, the idea that there are three windows of consequence for any medication. Any drug (or vitamin) will have a window of ineffectiveness, a window of benefit or effectiveness, and a window of toxicity. In almost all cases this is dose-related--a dose that is too low will have no benefit; a dose above that window and below the toxic window will be beneficial. The RDAs for example are supposed to be in a range that matches that middle window. This also helps one understand the potentially severe side effects of some medications such as those used in chemotherapy--the benefits window is so small that it is easy for the therapeutic dose to cross over into the toxic window.
In very sharp contrast, with only a few exceptions (iron, copper, vitamin D2, etc.) the benefits windows of supplements are quite large and permit relatively large doses without entering the toxicity window.

Love this!! Was literally just searching your past niacin clips yesterday! I’ve started taking 500mg of niacin a day to reduce LDL, triglycerides, and blood pressure, all of which are very high in me.

Niacin also is good for sunburns. It sounds kind of weird that the niacin flush would help your sunburn, but it works. I found it out by accident. It prevents peeling and helps you to recover overnight.

Great video :) Since I have two problems (steatosis and high cholesterol). I bought both (Niacin 500mg and Niacinamide 250mg). I will take them alternately one day and the other. this way my body will have the benefit of both without having too much of both.
