"Anonymous" just means that it doesn't start "I, John, write to thee..." but we have provenance through the first and second-century church leaders, such as Clement, Papias, Polycarp, Origen, Iraenaeus, &c. For example, Origen, a disciple of Polycarp, a disciple of John, quotes extensively from John's gospel while giving John credit for the text he is quoting. Origen even wrote a complete commentary on the Gospel of John. Provenance for the gospels is stronger than some scholars would lead you to believe.
