It would be wonderful to get Bart together with Markus Vinzent. Bart still seems open to the idea that the Gospels existed and were circulating prior to their attestation whereas Vinzent dates their writing to the time of their attestation. It seems like an Ehrman / Vinzent conversation would place long standing ideas in direct conversation with up-and-coming new ideas.

_Somebody_ made each one up. We can _call_ them "Mark", "Matthew", "Luke" and "John", because they must have had names; just likely not those. We are anyway confident that anybody knocking around Galilee in the 30s was securely buried by the time the first one was started in the 70s, never mind when the others were cribbed from it. Since 'Mark' got everything he needed for his Jesus to say straight from Paul, and plot details straight from Homer and the septuagint (in text order!), he didn't need anything else. Neither did the others, because each could just make up anything they liked better than the old stuff. Fiction is that way.

What are the chances that the gospel writers personally witnessed the ruins of the destroyed temple in Jerusalem?

Papias’ description of a work by Mark (almost certainly John Mark of ‘Acts’) actually fits our ‘John’ much better as there is an emphasis in our ‘John’ on several incidents in which Peter figures with the Beloved Disciple that do not occur in the Synoptics, plus Papias says the work of Mark (John Mark) is ‘not in order’ and we know the order of incidents such as the Temple clearing and a draught of fish in our ‘John’ is in a very different order to the Synoptics. 3) if you read Papias carefully you will see that he says that Aristion and John who he calls ‘Elders’ are both disciples of Jesus (and knew him) but distinguishes them both from the 12 apostles. This is the reason he uses the term John ‘the Elder’, to distinguish him from, John the Apostle. Just as other people in NT times and today can be described as ‘disciples’ without meaning they are of the 12. Jesus had many disciples/students

There seems to me a strong possibility that our ‘Mark’ is what Papias calls, and highly esteems as, the NARRATIVE of the sayings of the Lord written by Aristion. Aristion was later associated with Smyrna in the Provence of Asia. As an early narrative and known to be from ‘an elder’ a respected believer thought to be someone who knew Jesus, it was likely to be distributed widesly. Ifit came to be called, 50 years later, our ‘Mark’, this would explain how this ‘Mark’ ( Aristion’s work) survived ‘Matthew’ modifying it.

No mention of Josephus possibly writing Mark; Bart really does hate Atwill...

Amongst the problems I have with John, these are not grammatical exceptions, is the passage. 19:26-27. The site of a state crucifixion would not be an opportunity to conduct any business. For this passage to be a true representation of events, the female and male would have to be very close to an exhausted man on a cross. A Roman crucifixion is not a hospice during visiting hours, with the family hanging on some individuals dying words. The lie does not stop at that point though. The lie was delivered for its' inferential impact., as though the male figure is the "beloved apostle" and the female is the Blessed mother. This strategy provided John with a credibility above reproach. John is a dirty-bird.

My vote is Pantaneus. There were more Greek theologians in Alexandria than anywhere else after the Jewish Wars—which was when they were written.

I'll bet a couple of them were tax collectors because it's not very good advice to invite the tax collector in your home.

Does Bart know that his voice is similar to the voice of the serpent who deceived Eve in Genesis 3?

Imaginitive men with intentions to consume every great story known at that time and to seemingly better it.

But Paul came along and trashed most of it and made it into his own image.

Believers know nothing of what Jesus said.
And even if they did it wouldn't get them any nearer to a God.
The words of man are irrelevant in the scheme of things...as God intended.
