Marsha Linehan, creator of the highly-regarded Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), discusses Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) from the viewpoint of a clinician / researcher of the highest caliber.

DBT Has changed my life in countless ways. Im a recovering addict and alcohol. I have been a serial relapser. The skills I've learned from my dbt group and therapist, have afforded me over a year clean and sober. I've been floundering for the past 28 years. Thank you Marsha thank you!

Marsha, you and your method saved my life. 3 years sober, still struggling as I will always do, but being able to use my skills to overcome crisis.

I was so skeptical about any and all BPD treatments but DBT seems to be the only one that's been significantly beneficial for me. it's not perfect and it's a long hard road regardless but it's a solid, multi-faceted system to fall back on when nothing else is helping. I like that her approach is more stern and critical than the more touchy-feely approaches to BPD...I obviously don't speak for everyone but I have very little empathy with myself when it comes to how my BPD has hurt others, and I similarly don't appreciate it being used as an excuse for others' behavior. Maybe the REASON for that behavior but not an excuse. BPD makes you think and behave like a monster, and while I don't think it warrants treating the borderline patient as a monster, it definitely requires some tough love and certainly no handling with kid gloves. My experience with BPD was that the only real path to tolerance and improvement is in 100% accountability for your actions, even if you feel you have 0% control of your feelings.

I always said when I was getting treatment wouldn't it be nice to see somone who has gone through the same thing as me. Because then you see there is hope and guidence for your recovery, instead you see a professional using all big words in a paternising way and makes you feel dreadful and just sits there and writes notes for an hour solid and barely raises his head to acknowledge you. Thanks 😢

Wonderful ... the first time I heard DBT discussed and presented in this way. Fabulous. Dr. Linehan has walked the walk, always. I love the radical nature of DBT theory. These skills, as she presents them, are also perfect to integrate with my practice of contemplative psychotherapy. Thank you!

The therapy this woman created was the catalyst and is currently the constant background and a huge part of the motor to incredible improvements in my dealing of psychological problems I had for virtually all my life.. What she did and 'gifted' the world literally is saving lives all around the planet (if done 'right').

I highly recommend transcendental meditation for anyone struggling with meditating! It's sort of like a way to exist within the whirlwind and it has greatly enhanced my own DBT journey.

Her method has been helping me a lot! I still struggle with some catastrophic thoughts regarding my ability to handle emotionally challenging situations and how it might affect my professional development. I guess a lot of successful people have struggled with bpd but they often don’t share it since there’s a lot of prejudice still going on! I’d love to find some sort of professionals with bpd community to share experiences

From personal experience I have completed the course in Dialectical Behavioural Therapy.
Unfortunately it dud not work for me.
My amazing Psychiatrist said to me and I quote, " You have not failed DBT.
DBT has failed you. "
