Hello and welcome! My name is Anton and in this video, we will talk about the recent stream by the Event Horizon Telescope that revealed the image of Sgr A* - the super massive black hole in the middle of Milky Way galaxy

"And here's a doughnut." Thank you, Anton!

“And here’s a donut.”

The amount of scientific knowledge imparted to me by Anton over the past 4-5 years is quite remarkable.

such an incredible feat of science, astronomy and engineering.... and you rock for explaining it to us, Anton. You have one of the most important channels on the internet. It has real value for the education of the viewers and on top of that it inspires us. thank you.

How in the heck does he put out such detailed and well done videos every day???? Amazing

Props to whatever agency zoomed in on the donut.

Lovecraft's main theme in his writing was, of course, fear of the unknown. And nothing in astronomy/cosmology captures that more fully than a black hole. Azathoth would be a very fitting name not only for it's position in the galaxy but the fact that, as with Azathoth, it currently dormant or sleeping. And to wake either would cause untold destruction.

For those remnant jets you mentioned at the end, Dr. Becky says this might be evidence that Sag A* used to be oriented with the galactic plane but somehow shifted its orientation. Another explanation is that the jets actually fired in all directions, and the only reason they look like they are perpendicular to the galactic plane is because we are seeing the parts of the jets which has very few collisions with the galactic plane; sort of a survivor bias thing

"and...here's a donut." You crack me up Anton 😂

The long exposure of a train passing by really hits the point how stupidly challenging it is to even get a picture of an actual black hole. Remembering a scientist at the ESO presser said so as much that it's like trying to get a clear photo of a running toddler and expect to not be blurry to the point of unrecognizability.

Thank you Anton for clarifying the * or Star part. Makes so much more sense now. I asked during the live chat and you mentioned naming conventions. Thank you again for clearing that up! Keep on being Wonderful

It's amazing how Sagittarius A* is already unimaginable massive but just a tiny dot compared to M87. Like it's demonstrated in the graphic by the orbit of pluto within m87 and the much much smaller orbit of mercury arround Sgr A*

These objects are both fascinating and freaking terrifying.

The day is not the same without Anton saying "Hello wonderful person".

The speed of the gas around the black holes are actually quite similar. The difference is the size and thus the time it takes for particles to make a full rotation.

I made it to Minneapolis this weekend and caught the Brian Cox Horizons lecture. It was really good and also very funny interesting and entertaining. I'll be going back to any talk he has within 250 miles and possibly 1000 lol. It was worth the trip. He spoke on black holes and mostly about current particle physics and got into other topics but also had a comedy side to it that really brought out the crowd and made the event very entertaining and interesting.

For some reason the fact that the moon doughnut has sprinkles makes me feel better about the whole thing.

The picture at 10:38 or so and the explanation is a great analogy. Awesome to show a down to earth real world way the process works.

Between Antons explanation and Dr. Beckys explanation I get a much clearer idea of what is being represented! Each present additional facts the other didn't! 🤗
