I was too weak to handle rejection. I gave up on my dream of being a filmmaker, and now I drive a truck everyday. I deliver sand. I regret it everyday. Don't give up. You are a filmmaker. It's only over when you quit.

At this point, going into film competitions or trying to break into the industry, is harder than doing your own thing online. You have this channel with hundreds of thousands of eyes. You could get stuff funded, you can create films that you're passionate about and share them with us. You dont need the studios. Get a team together and start making stuff.

Thank you for sharing not only the good parts of filmmaking but the bad ones as well. Glad you posted this!

I’ve gotten academically dismissed from film school within my first year, so I had to dig through the trenches learning everything about making cinema by hand. Especially struggling on how to write good dialogue/screenplays since I’m unsurprisingly not a strong reader or writer in any regard. But through some certain experiences I can definitely say that I have inherited some form of skill and perspective that I don’t think schools can actually teach you. I still do feel intimidated when it comes to writing a screenplay or anything in general because of a blank paper staring at you, begging you to write something groundbreaking. But I’ve learned that at least maybe 75-80% of a movies success lies within the script. So I write down anything that sounds good on paper or on my phone and see what I can make in the future.

I made a short horror film about getting rejected from film contests. It got praise, but that's probably because people were scared to reject it.

As a student in architecture, I deeply relate to this subject, failing competitions, doubting others work or even checking the judges credentials hahaha ...
Thank you for putting this out there!
Wish you all the best!

As creatives, we hardly talk about rejections and it can feel very isolated. As if, I am the only one going through this many rejections in life. I am only a part time filmmaker and full time musician, but the amount of rejected demos I have in my hard drive probably has a striking resemblance. Thank you for this message Simon!

Thank you for sharing something that most people have a hard time dealing with. Many people only share success stories, this makes us feel like we are more alike.

I have always marvelled at what thick skins artists of all kinds must develop. All artists certainly have to learn how to avoid taking rejection personally or letting it eat away at your inner confidence. You're so right that it is not talked about as much as it should be, especially since doing so helps others discover they are not alone in feeling battered. More sharing of these experiences can help others learn how to process rejections as learning opportunities, and keep them in perspective as a routine part of any creative life.

I love how Simon has grown up. I feel like we're in a similar position in parallel worlds. It's so good to listen stories about rejection, failure and how to deal with it. You have the right attitude, man. And always remember that there's grace in uncertainty.

I got rejected by festivals, film schools etc but I have also won a short film prize and was selected as a representative for a film jury in the venice film festival. Its a constant up and down. It can be extremely demoralizing and hurtful not going to lie.

Hey, I'm 50 and have got a lot of rejections and as I have got older some people have said I should give up and do a real job. It might be my aussie attitude but I have always had never give up and wanting to share original work. Never give up on it, but also good support network helps. Surround yourself with like minded people.

Rejection is my biggest fear..
Sometimes the more hopes we have the more we get rejected..
We might feel down but at the end of the day atleast we created something and we definately learnt new thing

One of your best packed with your typical candor. Rejection seems more like an interpretation of how others view the film rather than the film itself. In absolute terms, making the film as you saw it is the success. How the rest of the world evaluates it is immaterial. Regards. PS - My Film Freeway results have many more Not Selected than Selected entries. Empathizing.

My school had a film festival two years ago. I was a known student with a burning passion for filmmaking and photography. The film I was a part of didn't even get the chance to be shown at the festival and people how never have attended to film class won the whole thing. Well, I hope you continue your journey! I have much more respect for those who fight through the tough times and continue after many failed attempts than those who succeed on their first try.

As a fellow filmmaker, your honesty is appreciated. Everybody gets rejected, it's not a reflection of talent💫🙌

Thanks for being so open about your rejections. YT works as any other social media, in which it's decided that the best content is about happy ending stories, about winning prizes, getting funded or anything along those lines. This is the part most of us have to deal with quietly or with a very very close group of people. Normalizing failure is a great effort to abolish this toxic positivity we see on social media. Thanks again for sharing.
