Add half tsp oil to the water and also rub a little oil all around the rim of the vessel that you're cooking in. There'll be no spillage, no mess, no boiling over.

There are many in comments saying remove the froth because the froth contains phytates (not good for health). But in south Indian cooking we come to know the rasam or dal or sambhar is cooked fully only because of the froth that comes. Also soaking, throwing away the soaked water, adding fresh water to cook the dals/pulses/millets all remove the phytates as much as possible. Also split dals dont have as much phytates like whole pulses do like rajma or channa or millets. Also soaking and throwing away soaked water and using fresh water to boil these pulses/dals/millets in all these cases removes the phytates. So you dont need to remove the froth.

Nice. Or alternatively put this masoor dal with sufficient water in a vessel and stack it over the rice vessel in a pressure cooker and keep for 3 whistles. Adding turmeric is optional because masoor dal is an easy going girl (unlike Drama Queen Tur dal which has to be soaked for 15 minutes minimum with turmeric powder and demands 4 whistles to cook but dont tell her I said that). Rice done, masoor dal also done. You can even add chopped tomatoes and curry leaves to the masoor dal. Once cooked you can mash them with a masher and add whatever masalas onion etc and make the dal. Beauty of pressure cooker no worry of boiling over or stirring. 😊😊

One should discard all the froths which comes on the top of all types of lentils.. during the cooking process… this froth triggers the level of Uric acid in our bodies… thus the lentils should be cooked in an open pot .. but not in the pressure -cooker..!!!👍👍

Can i add potatoes and onoin to this when cooked thank you.are these lentils presoaked.?? As i never know which ones to buy.when my mum made stu she added loads lentils.but i never noticed what lentils and because she always used presure cooker i didnt learn thank you uk

We in tamilnadu add a few drops of castor oil to the pot .castor oil acts as a catalyst and speeds up the cooking process and it is great for our gut too

Don’t we have to remove the foam that forms on top. It’s toxic and usually we cannot do it when pressure cooking
