Delaying neurodegeneration for 5-10 years would hugely improve quality of life in old age for millions of people. In this short expert lecture, Professor Mallucci looks at how drugs might be able to slow down progression and retain brain plasticity.
From mechanistic pathway discoveries of misfolding proteins, to the importance of synapse numbers and neuroprotective pathways, Professor Malluci shares her groundbreaking molecular biology research into neurodegenerative diseases. By better understanding how these changes occur, Professor Malluci hopes to repurpose drugs already licensed for existing conditions and realise their value for neurodegenerative conditions, including Parkinson's and dementia.
Newly elected Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences, Professor Giovanna Mallucci, presents her research on "Neurodegeneration: from molecules to medicines".
Professor Mallucci FMedSci was presenting as part of the Academy of Medical Sciences New Fellow's Admissions Day 2017, held on 28 June. On this day, the Academy welcomed 40 newly elected Fellows for their formal admission.
The day included presentations from four new Fellows on on their current research work: Professor Giovanna Mallucci, Professor Andrew Biankin, Professor Francesca Happé and Professor Thomas Williams. (All available on this channel.)
Professor Mallucci of the University of Cambridge is supported by the UK Dementia Research Institute and the MRC Toxicology Unit.
