I use a brood lamp from a hardware store on a foot pedal. Quick flashes of heat melt many thin layers.

be very carefull on bordeaux shoes - best, only do it on black shoes because the fire will heavily darken the leather. This goes for the heat gun, too!

Soooo, the spot of wax I was doing this too briefly lit on fire and now there is a dark spot on the cap of my shoe. What do I do?

You put too much wax polish on the flex zones. This is the cause of those cracks.
