Anytime you're traveling by any mode of transportation, always have a backup plan. There have been worse situations around the world involving stranded cruise ships, Amtrak collisions, massive airline systems down, cancelled flights, interstate highway and border closures to list a few.

The crap can hit the fan at anytime and any place and folks need to always have a backup plan, expect the worse and have enough disposal income to just go with the flow.

I'm from the Caribbean and was able to fly and visit Iceland in 2016 only thanks to the cheap prices this airline offered (on a student's budget). I can't deny it saddens me to know they're closing business, and more so, that they're leaving people stranded.

Well, at least you are entitled to a 600 euros compensation (for flight longer than 1000 km I believe )after the insolvency got cleared out.
Any flights in and out of E.U., including Iceland, Norway and Switzerland, are bonded by the rule.
