Her: I have one that you'll probably think is silly...
Him: NO! Trust me...I've been asked: "Is math related to science?"

Neil "If you're into the stuff, then you should know" Tyson
Truly witty, he sounds like what knowledge is

I love how he probably hates such non-scientific bs, yet explains everything with detailed answers, while also including the listening party and making them an active part of the conversation. This is truly inspiring. I assume he likes and respects every individual by default

“If you’re into this stuff, you should just know” THANK YOU!! The constant contradictions from these ‘astrologers’ is what gets me every time.

Believing in astrology today because it it’s historical origin is like still believing alchemy over chemistry because that was it’s begining.

I like the way Tyson approached this. Scientists are given a bad name because stereotypically they’re patronising and act like they know everything, steamrolling over other’s beliefs without any thought or feeling, but the way Tyson gently explained why astrology is false according to science is the way these debates should be carried out, rather than extreme condescension and condemnation of the opposition.

True... astrology cannot stand up to tests of modern science...and yet millions look forward to answers from the stars

When I was young I was naive, innocent did not know how to question, as I get older and a parent, I realise allot of our personality our traits don't come from the stars, universe, God or whatever it comes from our childhoods how we were raised our environments (tv, pop culture, Home) our caregivers, how we were treated the trick is to unlearn what wasnt helpful and embrace the parts that helps or evolve them and learn new things, easier said than done the process is always tougher than awareness As Neil said it best our egos think Mars cares about us, that should say it all. Love this guy.

I can’t believe I used to think he was a brilliant man. He has absolutely no idea what he’s talking about. He acts like everything he knows didn’t come from astrologers. Astrologers, astronomers, mathematicians, philosophers, and a lot of the time doctors. were all one field at one time.
And he acts like humans went from ignorant to what we have now. There isn’t a single person alive today that could do what Ptolemy did. With all our gadgets and technology they still knew more than we do so to say they were ignorant enough to make seasonal correlations about health is f-being ridiculous.

Isn't it possible that astrology is based on gravitational forces? The moon drags the oceans. We're made mostly of water. Is it not possible that gravitational forces affect us, both at birth and throughout our lives?

When I was at UC Berkeley in 1970, I was friends with a young guy who wanted to become a professional astrologer. We did an experiment for him to practice . I was going home for Christmas and arranged for a get together. All those attending gave me the date, the time of day and the city/state of their birth. He said that was all he needed to do a basic natal chart. He explained that a natal chart would describe with accuracy the personality of the subject. There were 8 of us going to be there. We all knew each other.

The 8 charts did not have names, nor any of the date/time/location identifiers. I handed them out at random. As people read the chart, they started saying "Oh, I got yours". Each of the 8 persons correctly handed the chart they were reading to the person it belonged to. Were there incorrect assertions and other errors? Of course. But there was no denying the identity of each persons chart.

I've never been a New Age kind of guy, and have never used astrology to guide my life. But I do not dismiss it entirely. I think you'd go broke trying to go full Nancy Regan, and base investments or public policy on the stars. But in very general terms I think it's useful. For example, my 3 ex-wives all agreed that even though I was born in late September, I was born under the sign of Feces.

It's ironic that in India we have a philosophy that ur ego doesn't matter, but still Indians follow the egocentric astrology

Imagine you get to ask an astrophysicist anything and then you waste it on astrology lol

Believing in Astrology also keeps people's minds off the fact that there really is a much more immediate, organized systemic oppression all around us--it's not the stars that draw your fate, it's the people who had a huge head start in life due to inherited wealth, who understood political & power structures long before your immigrant / impoverished self could lift your head out of water to figure it out.

I love this guy. He's absolutely astonishing explananing science and helping me to understand stuff that otherwise I wouldn't. The thing is: any conversation I hear from him regarding anything else than science makes me believe that he knows nothing outside of it.
