Also it;s good to have a couple on stand-by. Learned that the hard way. Shot the hook, first round of the day at 100 yards with 7.62x54R 147 grain FMJ out of my Ex Dragoon. It was a fluke, but it wasn't my target and it wasn't on my property so I felt bad the whole rest of the day.

Wow, my range doesn't allow high velocity rifle rounds on steel targets under 250 yards. I really wish I had my own private range at my house. You sir are a lucky man.

@roentgen571,

What happens if the wire is too small is that the target swings around and doesn't
stay flat to you shooting angle. I've been doing this a long time. The closer you can get the bolt or hanger to the size of the hole in the steel, the better the target will return to face you after you hit it. Very frustrating if it's hanging sideways half the time.

We use a "sleeve on the "stick" for a quick change of a jig, double bent piece of rebar which runs about .27 cents. I have found, if not for the "lucky" shot, the rebar will around a year.... I, we do not shoot the volume that the author does to any degree, but on some weekends, their is the odd 4 hours of racket and ringing.

Are you worried about the Skeeter Population with those tires?  I know those fill up with water and can breed skeeters.  but if you put holes in the sides of them they could possibly drain a bit.  :)  Great idea's though for a range set up.

Maybe it would be a good idea to just use bailing wire. It would be even cheaper and faster to replace. Just a thought, great video.

@hickok45 I hadn't thought of that, but it makes perfect sense. You'd have to have two holes to use thinner wire...and then we start getting a lot more complicated and making the target-hanging job harder than just using the hook from Home Depot... :-D

@kelbo031890, I thought about it, but my steel foundry has been out of operation lately. :-)

That looks like the one foot model from that company you referenced $50. I am thinking about getting some of those for the range.

@dills2403,
It eats at it just a little bit.

Maybe you could have a small piece of AR500 steel welded to the front of the hook at a downward angle, after hanging the target of course, to deflect bullets and to protect the hook. Hopefully bullets wouldn't bend the hook. I'd only do this if I knew the target would last for decades (AR500) and there would be no real need to unhook it.

have you thought about linking chains instead? probably last longer than a hook, idk.

@higgininja,
Just whatever I find the cheapest.

Are those used tire for containing the bullets fragment ??

Looks like you could just use some coathanger wire.

do the bullets never bounce off tires if they hit them?

Well, it's a good reason to try your best. ;)

There's a solution to that... Don't shoot the hook. LoL
