There is a story of the women's Chinese Olympic race walking team where the pace-keeper out-walked the team leader. Other teams were beating them, so the leader and the rest of the team quit the race. The pace-keeper continued and won the race. However, because the team leader wasn't the winner, the team ostracized the pace-keeper, who ended up celebrating with the Australian team instead.
