Are the Jewish people a 'race'? | Documentary

Показать описание
As you probably know, Whoopi Goldberg has stirred some controversy over her comments on the Holocaust. She argued that the Holocaust was not based on race, and she also implied that European Jews are essentially White people. Was she correct, or was she mistaken?
This documentary/commentary provides some insight into that question by analyzing the nature of Jewish Identity (and by extension: Jewish Identity Politics). The following documentary is divided into two sections. Within the first section, we start off with a brief commentary on Whoopi Goldberg’s Holocaust remarks, and her critics. Afterwards, we delve into some of the major Zionist intellectuals (e.g. Theodore Herzl, Vladimir Ze’ev Jabotinsky, Moses Hess and Israel Zangwill), and their diverse views regarding Jewish identity.
Also included are the very controversial and iconoclastic thinkers: Arthur Ruppin and Arthur Koestler. Ruppin posited the view that the Original Jews were NOT Semitic, but rather Indo-Germanic peoples. Intermingling, cohabitation with different groups, and Jewish proselytization (in Ruppin’s view) resulted in the formation of different Jewish races and ethnicities. Similarly, Koestler delved into the conversions which took place under the authority of the Khazars (in his book “The Thirteenth Tribe”). In light of the misinformation and propaganda spread by both Koestler’s detractors and anti-Zionists, a balanced view of Koestler is provided, and various myths are refuted.
Section II of the documentary deals with the sensitive subject of Inter-Jewish Ethnic and Racial Tensions in the Israeli State (aka Israel’s “Ethnic Demon”). Within the early stages of the Israeli State, many members of Israel’s intelligentsia expressed concerns about the large influx of Mizrahi Jewish immigrants into Israel. David Ben-Gurion correctly prophesied that European Jews would be outnumbered by the more populous Mizrahi Jews, and that Israel would eventually become less European and more Levantine/Middle-Eastern in this process of demographic change. Some of the allegations involving medical experimentation on the Mizrahi Jewish community are also discussed (e.g. the Yemenite Children Affair and the Moroccan-Jewish Ringworm Affair).
In addition, the anti-Ashkenazi racism among Mizrahi Jews is also analyzed and deconstructed. Was Yigal Amir’s murder of Yitzhak Rabin purely based on his opposition to the Oslo Peace Accords? Or was there also a racial motive to his murder of Rabin? And while many people are familiar with Rabbi Ovadia Yosef’s anti-Gentile and anti-Palestinian statements, not many people are aware of the inflammatory anti-Ashkenazi remarks he made throughout his life. Lastly, is the very disturbing case of Stiven Malik – a far-right and ultra-religious Mizrahi Jew who called for the extermination of Ashkenazim.
Afterwards, we examine the thought and ideas of Kalman Katznelson, an Ashkenazi Nationalist and revolutionary who authored his magnum opus, “The Ashkenazi Revolution.” One of his motivations behind the writing of this book was the anti-Ashkenazi racism which was rampant amongst the Mizrahi Jewish community at the time. He discusses his transformation from being a Zionist, to becoming an Ashkenazi Nationalist. He details how Zionism had failed at protecting European Jewish interests, and he also laments how Zionism eventually led to the eradication of European Jewish identity through its romantic recreation of Hebrew identitarianism.
Meron Benvenisti, a left-wing Israeli political scientist also probes into the divide between the European-descended Jews and the Middle-Eastern Mizrahim – and provides a critique of the Mizrahim and Israel’s right-wing. Plenty more is included in this documentary/commentary (e.g. photograph comparisons between Jews and Gentiles, disproving the notion of a particular “Jewish physiognomy,” et cera).
