How to Teach Sight Words | Reading Lessons

Hi, my name is Anne Glass. I'm a reading and learning specialist at a private school in New York City, and I work with kindergartners through third graders on reading word study and writing skills. In addition to being a reading specialist and a learning specialist, I am also a parent and today I am going to talk to you about topics in reading. When I teach a reading lesson to young emergent readers, my over arching goal is to make sure they are successful and that means that I have a very specific goal in mind and I keep my goals very manageable. I also don't keep the object of my lesson a secret whether it's a phonic skill or a comprehension skill, or just what were going to make sure that we know from the start what the expectations are. I think across the board in reading instruction it's really important to be explicit with our students about what the context of the lesson is and what the criteria for success are. It's also crucial to provide as often as possible multi sensory methods for teaching early reading skills to the extent that is possible you should always provide opportunities for visual kenistetic and auditory reinforcements when your teaching a new concept, and the final thing is that I always want my students to feel successful at the end. Which means that if I'm asking them to read a text, I'm going to start with a pre review of every concept that they might encounter in that text. Whether they are sight words or phonic concepts were going to be prepared to encounter those concepts within the text and decode successfully with that information.

My boy still has hard times reading some books though he managed to graduate from kindergarten. The trainer felt issues he might be able to enroll grade as well as suggested to hold him back. Nevertheless I did not give up hope until eventually I learned this unique program, a reading manual. Excellent Video!! In my opinion struggling and reluctant readers really enjoy working on a computer as it allows them to progress at their own pace. The more a child practices the new sound combinations and words, the more they learn. Any resources to help them with this practice helps them improve.

More commonly, these are referred to as exception words. High frequency/sight words are based on the Dolch and Fry word lists. These are the most commonly used words children will encounter in subsequent grades while reading grade level text.

Last March, I stumbled onto this reading guideline “fetching loli only” (Google it). My boy and I have already been serious in doing reading lessons since then. Today, my son do not need my help to read textbooks. My boy feels really confident and is performing good in Kindergarten this year.

That's not what the research shows. Sight words, along with vowel sounds should be taught in isolation to promote mastery and avoid confusion.

*My young man took part in reading support services when he was in 1st grade. This excellent reading guideline ( **lovy.biz/1699** ) has helped a lot in improving the reading capabilities of my son while he is on grade level and his progress really amazed his reading tutor. For me, this program must be utilized in classes*

Teaching it phonetically is the only way to prepare a foundation for a child to build upon. It is impossible for a child to learn how to pronounce spell and then understand through whole word memorization. There are too many words in the English language, if a child is to grow intellectually they must learn it phonetically.

If you would use the award, winning Sing, Spell, Read & Write program you would see that sight words are introduced logically and are actually decodable by Step 19.
