You hear people claim the Amish are "anti-technology" (Weird Al's video may have had something to do with that...). But is it really the case?

One of the most fascinating aspects of the Amish is their approach to technology. For example: why do Amish ride in cars - but don't drive them? Some people think how the Amish use technology is hypocritical...but there is a reasoning behind it.

Like with other things Amish, there is no one-size-fits-all answer to the question. But in this video I explain the ins and outs of the Amish approach to technology - and how things can vary in different Amish communities.

Could you do a video on Amish cemeteries and funerary practices? The cemetery in Bowling Green MO has identical, plain, unmarked headstones. Since this is the only Amish community I’ve seen I’ve wondered if this is common. Thanks.

This was most helpful. I saw a video where the Amish were using kerosene lamps, and I was curious as kerosene usually requires a pretty good level of Technology to produce and the family using it was old order Amish. Thanks for the info.

No one can escape the use of technology. The wheels, levers, etc are technology albeit the most basic ones. But if we refer to more modern ones (engines, electricity) those are EVIL - at least for older generation amish. Remember the amish girl student - just a few years back - who refuse to do her valedictory speech because it would utilize a microphone? But then as new generations appear we could expect some tolerance. The same way hijab is becoming resisted by new generation Iranians despite the "teachings". The same way most christians and catholics engage in pre-marital sex despite being technically prohibited by their churches. Teaching is one thing and compliance is another. Some amish now uses phones and tablets.

the need to survive requires some compromises, they reluctantly allow technology but not use without reason…it doesn’t help anyone if the business goes under because they aren’t able to be contacted immediately, you have dozens affected including many in their own community
