I don't think people understand how much courage it takes to leave communities like the Amish. Shame, no support, no where to turn to, no experience of life on your own. These girls may appear somewhat scared but they are so strong I can not even believe that they are doing this.

Part of the problem here is that Amish (and similar sects) raise children largely incapable of dealing with the modern world. So when they encounter reality, they mostly flee back to the sect.

I saw some Amish people here in Los Angeles and they seemed both confused and fascinated by the scenery. Unfortunately I didn't get to talk to them but I still admire them from the distance.

The fact that the boys parents wouldn’t let him get the surgery he needed because “god wanted him to be like that” is heartbreaking. I’m so glad he’s found a girl who likes him for him.
