In Airforce bootcamp, 1976, our TI ("Training Instructor") once left the room, and left his "Smokey Bear Hat" behind. A certain jokester among us put it on, and began immitating the TI. He didn't see the TI come up behind him. TI says, "Pretty good, Recruit. Now drop and give me fifty!" 😅

We mocked a company commander in training (he was long since out of earshot as we’d been inspected by him earlier in the day). Our CC heard us and worked us out in the barracks until our sweat started building on the ceiling. They called that “making it rain”.

I had a blast, but some others… not so much.

My uncle during army bootcamp did something similar when a DI asked what were the five important things of a rifleman (or something similar to that) and he responded “dodge, duck, dip, dive and dodge” from the movie Dodgeball 😂😂😂 he had to do push ups till the end of the day. Wish I could’ve seen that one 😂

A few decades ago after the trainees completed the POIQT, they were baptized in the Upitoi Creek, reciting “ I am the Infantry, ” and we gave them their blue disks, signifying that they were officially US Army Infantrymen, and welcomed them into the ranks of the world’s finest Infantry. Later in the evening we had a “talent show” contest, to see who could do the best imitation of one of the Drill Sergeants. Great fun. Lots of laughs and tears. Generally, you know you’ll never see these guys again. I’m always grateful for those two years on the trail at Fort Beginning GA. It’s the best job I ever had.
