We got an inside look at how United States Army recruits are exposed to tear gas during basic combat training.

Senior video correspondent Graham Flanagan spent four days at the Army's Maneuver Center of Excellence inside the Fort Benning military base near Columbus, GA.

Recruits are exposed to CS gas, more commonly known as tear gas. Side effects include burning on the skin and in the eyes, and profuse discharge of mucus. While wearing a gas mask, the recruits spend approximately five minutes inside a gas chamber where CS tablets are burned to create the gas.

My older sister went through this except her mask was letting gas in the ENTIRE TIME. Her DS let her use his mask for a few seconds, by the end she was so used to the gas that she was the only person not coughing anymore 💀

I ended up running these CS gas tests in the navy
It's nothing after a while
It's really no big deal
You can get used to it pretty quick
The trick is to look at what's going on around you as you go in the chamber
Stay as far away from the pellets as possible
Try not to be in the first batch to go inside
Breathe a lot before you go in there then start shallow breathing
Take small breathes
When they get you to take your mask off
DONT take a breath straight away
Let out what you have slowly
Then put your lips in a whistle position
Breathe in but very small amounts regulate this first breath in stages

For anyone curious what it feels like to be in CS.

It's different for different types of exposure, there's vapor, gas, foam, smoke, powder, etc.

In my experience the vapor/smoke burns your lungs, it forcefully makes you cough. When you're sick you can feel you're about to cough and kind of assist in some way. Not this. It's all involuntary. When you try to breathe you can feel a scratchy sensation and your body immediately coughs, and coughs, and coughs.

The powder really burns the eyes, it's like getting soap in your eyes but way worse and lasts way longer. Keep your eyes open, you'll be crying and want to keep them shut but opening them and forcing air to hit the eye makes it wear off. But pray you don't have any powder on your eyelashes, it'll get in and you'll be in for round two.

It feels like something is in your throat, not solid but kind of scratchy in a sense, that's what makes you cough. If you breathe through your nose it makes you sneeze, burns, and have discharge sometimes.

The foam usually is meant to be applied to the eyes but it also has an "aroma" that gives a similar effect to the smoke/vapor.

Also don't rub your eyes or wear contacts when exposed, both very very bad for you.

The gas chamber seems like hell at first but when you realize it cleans your sinuses, you'd be breathing in 4k.

When I was in that very chamber our drill sergeant had the CS gas so thick you could barely see your hand in front of your face. It was pure misery, I'm quite certain when it was my turn to tell my Drill Sergeant my name and SSN, I was speaking in tongues. Hopefully after the film crew left they made them go back in and do it the "right" way. It was a good lesson for 17 year old me no matter how things absolutely SUCK, you cannot lose focus of what must be to save your life and the lives of your friends. This came into play after 9/11 when the war started. If I had gotten a scaled down or "kinder, gentler" version of the gas chamber event, it would have been rather forgettable and that mental fortitude wouldn't be there. Remember the one guy the camera was focusing on who was drooling and had snot flying out every where? That was EVERYONE in my platoon.

When I went through it I had been previously told that it’s the coughing that messes you up and to try not to. So I went though it in Basic and man were the MTIs giving me weird looks when i wasn’t affected much. They told me to speak more but I made sure I didn’t cough. 10/10 wasn’t terrible if you don’t cough
