Jordan Peterson ... my Life is experiencing change since I started listening

I'm interested in historical fashion, and follow many youtubers who are also. I wouldn't say that wearing Victorian fashion was an encumbrance - it was absolutely a display of wealth and status, but to the modern eye it looks far more uncomfortable to wear then it really was. Much of that was down to the corset, which distributed the weight of the gown and skirts across the entire torso making it fairly comfortable to wear - most women didn't tight lace either, or only did it as much as it was comfortable to do so. Most of the appearance of a small waist was down to the optical illusion caused by the large skirts on bottom and the shape of the garment on the shoulders, sleeves and the size and type of headwear, contrasted by the smooth and unpadded waist. Pictures and portraits were also doctored, just as people do today with filters or edits. The only real two encumbrances was the size of the hoop skirts, which were only really worn for formal events (unless you happened to be royalty or similar, and even then it wasn't 24/7), and trains on dresses which again was mostly limited to evening dresses.

Would love to see the Victorian era in real time because I’m sure the real was not as elegant as perception… sorta like today’s social medial

The modern day equivalent would be people who drive giant gas guzzling trucks that they never take off road.

I love Jordan and he is mostly correct on this one. According to the Victorian seamstress fashion channel I like, Victorian fashion isn’t as bad as it’s made out to be. For example, corsets did not have to be over tightened and usually weren’t so they didn’t impede movement and breathing. There main function is the same as a push up bra.

Dressing with such encumbrances loudly advertises that they did not need to do practical things such as work. Also, since most of these outfits needed assistance to get into, it also advertises the fact that they could afford servants, not to mention the upkeep of the garments themselves. When someone wears clothing that is this elaborate, you immediately know the wearer is not doing the washing, mending and ironing themselves😄!

When surviving is surpassed, there is no need for practical clothing. Interestingly, this state also allows for recreational creativity, giving birth to the most extravagant limit-testing work done by humans. I think although we can observe that phenomenon through architectural masterpieces for example, it is most evident in fashion because you can hide from an ennemy behind thick walls but you can't run for your life with a mop on your head.

Excellent Peterson! Have you read "The Human Zoo" by Zoologist Desmond Morris? You'll never look at your fellow humans the same again, it's much along these lines 😂

Some years back Prada came out with these wispy chiffon shifts with barely there stilettos for their Fall/Winter collection, and it was such a clear example of this. Only the very wealthy whose feet never touch unswept ground, and who never spend more than a tipsy moment in the cold air could manage it.

Clothing was invented to keep Ppl warm in colder climates.
In Victorian era 99% of Ppl didn't have much in the way of clothing at all & most items were past down and repatched & patched again.
I believe many places in Africa, South America's & parts of Asia, a lot of native folk were largely naked
in the warm climates. Even upto 1960s alot of footage taken clearly shows some had bodily adornments but no what we would call 'clothing'.
