Worth noting that everyone looks better on a film camera compared to an iPhone, it brings out the features and makes a face look more defined

Some of those pictures are SUPER cherry picked, there were plenty of uglier faces in the 1950s, I don't think people are getting uglier

What was most important was the fact that at those times in the past people lived in black and white.

I personally think it was the styling and culture of those times. It wasn't unusual for teens to dress the same as their parents.

firstly these are yearbook pictures, where everyone does they hair, wears makeup, and poses so they inherently looks more mature. and people are literally always saying “kids nowadays look like grown adults” and now we’re backtracking to this?

My theory is that people are now aging slower. This fits a lot better considering there’s so many more 30 year olds that look like young adults now.

I think the black and white film makes the biggest difference. It already gives an older feel, but the shadows and lighting seem to hit the face perfectly with film photos vs phone photography.

Beauty bias, the pictures of ugly people are less likely to be seen/publicised compared to their more attractive counterparts.

That still doesn’t explain why ppl in the past looked better/older. What they exerted more downward force on their jaws? Why? How? What in the past made them do so? If you’re going to make a connection to two unrelated things, explain the connection.

Some answers:
1. The style. We associate their styles with older people hence they look older for us
2. Black and white can define faces more
3. More people grew up in hardship which can affect outer appearance
4. Why we feel people looked better is most probably bc of bias. Pictures of beautiful people are just shared more often.
5. Beauty standards like different eyebrow, face, lip shapes. Make up can have a great effect on appearance.
6. Different poses. How you look and pose on photos changed to some degree
7. Photos were a bigger deal back then and not constantly taken like nowadays. So people cared more to look good on them

My grandpa was Extremely handsome in the 40's/50's with a kind of classic movie star look...violet eyes, shiny black hair, a dimple in his chin and a pearly white smile...plus the clothes was Amazing in his youth!
I'm almost 50 myself now, so I guess my benefit is to look quite much younger than his generation by the same age...always something I suppose 😁

People are definitely not getting uglier. You haven’t seen enough old pictures if you believe this

It's camera lenses too. Take a normal selfie with your phone and then try to put your phone in a stand, put a timer and take the photo from far away. Compare the photos and you will see how in the second case your face doesn't look so long and your nose not so big. Selfies are really distorting how people see themselves today.

They had mogger bone structures because they weren’t eating diets of processed sugars and seed oils. And they were more active, so hgh was higher. There’s a reason athletes in school look one way, because they are active and their body produces more hgh

They look older because they have styles that we associate with grandparents, so they automatically look more mature

Anecdotally, the high schoolers who were the best looking and most mature looking were also the ones that aged the fastest. The baby faced, awkward looking teens looked better in their 30’s

Let's be honest if there wasn't social media people would really care more about themselves but people I don't care who you are hear are often comparing themselves to influencers or Gamers or whatever and people lose their confidence because they don't go touch grass and have a life
