Why You Should Clean Your Engine

For one of my engine detail videos click here:
A mechanic will feel better working on a clean engine. Keep in mind the engine in your car is their desk. By cleaning your engine bay you will also be able to detect oil leaks sooner and by being underneath your hood you might catch one of your fluids getting low. It always a good idea to check inside your engine compartment. When it comes time to sell your car the prospective buyer will no doubt open the hood. If the engine is dirty the buyer will assume you did not take care of your car regardless of how well you have kept it maintained. If the the engine is clean the assumption will be that you did take care of your car and it will sell faster and for better money. Also in this video a rainbow appears at the end in front of my house.

A lot of you have questions about this video so I’ll take a few minutes to answer them.
* I placed a link in the video on how to clean an engine and put it in the description.
* I’ve been cleaning so many engines in my life I lost count. Hundreds and Hundreds.
* Contrary to what Scotty says most engines have no problem getting sprayed down. There are precautions one must take and there are certainly older engines with deep well spark plugs that I wouldn’t do. Mbz 5.0 comes to mind
* The newest technique that I use in addition to foiling is spraying all electrical connections with WD40 - which stands for “Water Diisplacement, Formula #40”
* I would never clean an older engine with old plug wires.
* And finally always care for the Mass Air Flow Sensor located at the intake. It’s the most vulnerable part of the engine with moisture, and even then it’s not such a bad idea to take it out and clean it every so often.
That’s it for now.
Thanks so much for watching and I’ll see YOU in the next video!

I've always cleaned my engines, usually with a pressure washer, and get a surprising amount of pushback from people making various claims. Over thirty years now, though, on cars of all ages, I have never had a single problem. I don't cover any of the electronics, and I don't avoid any part of the engine. The one thing I do is to hold the wand back 2-3 feet so the pressure is reduced and high-velocity water can't force itself in past seals and into electronics. As my own mechanic I appreciate having a clean engine, and those nice under-hood shots on your advertising platform of choice really helps when it's time to sell.

That view at the end was amazing. Like something out of a fantasy movie

If a car is kinda clean but the engine bay is very clean, that may be a sign of recent engine work, such as a cleaning to try and find a leak, and might actually be a bad sign instead of a good one.

Oh my goodness that is a beautiful rainbow. Quick tip I suggest always leaving your vehicle running when washing under the engine bay. Unless you have a pressure washer at home and the car's been sitting overnight

I keep the visible areas clean, I don't ever touch any of the electronics. Mostly the plastic covers and such.

Thank you for keeping me aware of this. I kept putting it off, but I finally did take my old Vibe to the carwash. Covered the maf sensor, some other connections, and the alternator (just my ocd kicking in). Looks so much better. Ready for another 200k miles! And thank you for that beautiful rainbow!

SPOT ON! I always clean the engines on my vehicles and things with gas engines in general as if nothing else they run cooler - last longer and much easier to spot any kind of leaks or otherwise.
Goes hand in hand in areas w/4 seasons where they put salt down on the roads - minimal is to run vehicles thru the car wash units that spray from the bottom upward a minimal of once if not twice a week depending on how often it snows and how often a new layer of salt is put down on the roads. If pressure washing besides - first thing is to pressure wash underneath as much as possible too.

Am I ever happy I stuck around until the end - also have to say I 100% agree with your analogy on the clean engine bay… the one you showed was bad lol

Right off, I already assume that the fluids have not been charged as well.

Good tips. I saw a double rainbow about the same size a few months ago.

Rodent damage is such an underrated consideration when considering whether to clean engine bay or not. There is a debate to this subject and different opinions

As a kid in probably kindergarden or 1st grade I was awestruck by the idea that there was a leprechaun and a free pot of gold on the ends of rainbows.
