The Origin of Calvinism and Arminianism (Why I Am Not a Calvinist, Part 14)

Where did the Calvinist/Arminian divide originate? In this video, we go through the history of how it happened. We will consider the followers of John Calvin and how they disagreed with the followers of Jacob Arminius, which led to the Synod of Dort and the resulting canons.

The followers of Arminius presented five negative articles and five positive articles.

In the end, the States General of the Netherlands ruled in favor of the followers of John Calvin, and produced the Canons of Dort, which included "Five Heads of Doctrine."

The Five Heads of Doctrine:
• Of Divine Predestination
• Of the Death of Christ and the Redemption of Men Thereby
• Of the Corruption of Man
• Of Man’s Conversion to God
• Of the Perseverance of the Saints

The beliefs in the Five Heads eventually became known as the acrostic TULIP.

Total Depravity
Unconditional Election
Limited Atonement
Irresistible Grace
Perseverance of the Saints

The Arminians and Calvinists, of course, never reconciled and the divide exists today.

Of course, there is a third view, which I (with somewhat of a bias) label "biblical salvation."

I don’t have a problem saying I’m an Arminian. However, I am a 4 point Arminian. A good resource for this conversation of theology is “40 questions about Arminianism” by Dr. J Matthew Pinson and “the Quest for Truth” by Dr. Leroy Forlines

The word "grace" doesn't even have any meaning unless the person to whom grace is offered had a choice to offend or not.

Gifts are not earned. If we are somehow earning our salvation simply by accepting God's grace it's not a gift. The contradictions in the Calvinism systematic frustrates me no end.

I don't think Calvin himself would be a Calvinist.

I am not a Calvinist, but does man simply choose to take hold of the gift? Or, do men make professions, God judges the heart, and saves those He judges as having faith?

Many Calvinists will state that prevenient grace is not a term in the Bible. I agree, but I believe the concept of prevenient grace is in Scripture, much like the concept of the Trinity.

Calvinism, or determinism worming its way into mainstream belief goes back to Augustine. He was a Manechean Gnostic for 9 years before “converting”. This form of gnosticism blending in Stoic false teaching (mentioned in scripture) and taught determinism. After many years of fighting against his previous beliefs, he flipped the script and began using political connections to ram determinism into the mainstream. Both Calvin and Luther reach back to Augustine as the one the corrected the church, who in their minds had been wrong/inconsistent prior to Augustine.

It's so strange that the best pastors, writers and scholars these days are calvinist
