You don't actually need to make caramel separatly, just throw sugar, butter and your spices of choice in a frying pan(that is safe to use in an oven obviously) and put quartered apples there, 25-25 minutes on medium heat till it's a bit golden, the rest of caramelization process will be completed in the oven

I can tell by my own experience, absolutely yes, sometimes it won't come out as you expected (like one time where i tried making a pineapple upside-down cake and the pineapples floated and got on the wrong side of the cake) but nothing some creativity and resourcefulness can't fix
