Figuring out how to choose your first Age of Sigmar army can be a struggle. This ultimate beginners guide shows you how to pick an Age of Sigmar faction, going through all of the Age of Sigmar factions in the game to help you help find the perfect Age of Sigmar army for you!

There are a lot of amazing Age of Sigmar factions with unique looks and playstyles so figuring out how to pick your first AoS army can get a bit overwhelming. You may often ask yourself which age of sigmar army should I play?

With Age of Sigmar 4th edition just around the corner it is the perfect time to get started with your first Age of Sigmar army. We go through all of the factions in this ultimate beginners guide giving you an overview of the lore and playstyle of each faction. Plus tips on finding your perfect Age of Sigmar army in 4th edition, but also what to do once you have chosen it!

Many players find their perfect Age of Sigmar army by a variety of the following things.
- How the models/army looks. End of the day you'll be building and painting up these models so having something you like makes a big difference.
- The lore and stories of the faction, possibly a favourite character.
- The play style of the army, whether this is a shooting army, strong combat army or something in between.
- The size of the army, whether this a small elite force or prefer a horde of models that cover and overwhelm the board.
- The cost of an army can make a big difference. You may want to get started with a smaller cheaper army as the hobby can get very expensive.
- Others pick based on the current power level, which often changes with games workshop balancing regularly I'd advise against this.
End of the day there is no wrong reason so don't worry! Your enjoyment is all that matters in this amazing game.

For those who are looking to expand to another Age of Sigmar army then this will also be of help to you!

Just a quick update for you all, which happened after the video was finished and uploaded - the Orruk Warclans has been split up so the Kruleboyz and Ironjawz will be separate factions in 4th edition, which actually feels like a great thing for both of them. This way your preferred playstyle will have more options rather than just being a sub faction of a larger one.
Hope that helps and thanks for watching!

The problem with AoS is that all the factions are cool, thus you can't choose just 1.

Rule of cool is number one in AoS. I picked up ironjawz and Nighthaunt. I have never felt bad about it.

Its very simple to pick a race in AOS, you only need to ask yourself one question really. Do you want to be Dinosaurs Riding Dinosaurs, Or do you want to be Dinosaur Food?

I kid of course, but man Lizardmen/Seraphon are such a perfect faction for me, and I jumped into the game because of their refresh.

I’m glad you’re doing AoS content as well as 40K vids

One correction: While Khorne looks like a Timmy unga bunga army on the tin, on the table it's actually one of the fiddliest, with lots of techy shenanigans from blood tithe and a lot of relatively fragile units as the core of the army. We haven't seen what it will be like in 4th yet, so it's hard to say for sure, but I would be surprised if they wound up being ironjawz but red.

My picks:

Grand Alliance Order: Kharadron Overlords
Grand Alliance Chaos: Maggotkin of Nurlge
Grand Alliance Death: Ossiarch Bonereapers
Grand Alliance Destruction: Gloomspite Gitz

As much as I would really want to have my first army as a death army, I dont know if i could give up picking kharadron overlords first, i mean, steampunk dwarfs in airships! God damn, what a combo, what an amazing looking army, but then again, my heart will always be with undead and death related armies.

Awesome seeing more AoS content, been a bit of an underdog on the content side of things even though the models and lore are pretty great. I'm collecting Fyreslayers atm and even planning a second army.

Always love to see more AoS content, vanguard box tier list would be also awesome

Finishing up my first box of sylvaneth. I love their look and how they play. Plus Belthanos looks really cool.

While I don't plan to start an AoS army anytime soon, the Kharadron Overlord have some great models with steampunk aesthetics so I will be buying some to paint!

Appreciate the breakdown. Was always more of a 40k player with a passing interest in Warhammer Fantasy, playing a bit with Dark Elves back in 8th edition (4th and 5th edition with 40k).

Was completely lost with Age of Sigmar and how much he it seems to have changed compared to when I played.

Wow. This was a great video. Sooo many cool factions to choose from. Ultimately, I went with Nighthaunt. Not sure how they’ll play but when I saw the way Lady Olynder was painted by the Grimdark Compendium I knew it was the one for me. More AoS content please! Subscribed.

As a Kharadron Overlords (KO) player, I didn't immediately think my army was inexpensive. To be effective, you should have at least 2 Frigates and an Ironclad, which would cost £144. Additionally, having a limited model range means you need to buy more. For example, the Thunderers come in a box of 5, but to make them most effective, you need to run them in a unit of 10, which costs £64. Then, you have to consider their weapon options, which would probably cost four times that amount. The KO army is really good, but Games Workshop (GW) has me by the wallet. 🎮

Been saving kruleboyz since their launch for a day i knew that they would be their own faction - seems that day is coming sooner rather than later ;D

Thank you for this. As someone just looking to try out AoS, this guide was fantastic. Definitely helped me pick one faction and create a short list of others that appeal.

I do hope to get into 4th edition of AoS. Like a commenter mentioned earlier, it's unfortunate Beastmen went extinct in this universe to be sent back to the Old World, but I'm interested in either Fyreslayers or Flesh Eater Courts. It depends on whether I want to go elite or want more options and to collect a wide range of models haha.
