there was actually a scrapped line where he said his uncle(?) got electrocuted and "smelled really good" but it was scrapped in favour of the "you can't save everybody".

In the comics, his Gwen and Miles actually married and had kids (the kids also got their powers). But on their anniversary, they were both killed by one of their villains (forgot who) and Spider-Ham was left to look after their kids on his own.
Keep in mind, he had to watch helplessly as they were both killed.
