Ford Mustang & F150 6R80 Auto Transmission Filter & Fluid Change

Ford was not being friendly to the DIY community when they designed this transmission. The dipstick is right beside the catalytic converter and fluid must be checked when the transmission is hot. Additionally, there is no drain plug making fluid changes more difficult. This video shows the easy way of changing the fluid with no mess and also properly checking the fluid after changing.

I have watched several of these videos and many comments state that they would drain out 5 1/2 quarts of fluid and have to install 7 quarts of fluid to get the proper fluid level. So does this mean that the factory under filled the transmission? Or is the transmission now being over filled? Kind of odd there could be such a difference. There is some fluid in the filter but not that much. Also, I have found that welders gloves help when checking the fluid level.

I think you are the first person i found to say that "A is not cold level because it will completely overflow when hot" because I went to the middle of A when running and cold and it poured out when i opened it HOT near 200F. So what you're saying is what i am seeing too. At 166 and idling in park (after going through the gears) it was not overflowing, but way up on the barrel of the dipstick, so i need to take a little out to get into the top of the B range when at 195F, correct? i have a 2016 F150 with the 6R80.

My 2014 Ford Mustang V6 3.7 has the factory transmission filter. I am worried it might be clogged with metal shavings, etc. My Mustang has 76, 000 miles. Should I change the filter? Thank you.

Thank you for the video and instructions, did you end up putting 6 L in all together?

Hi,
I have searched for and seen many videos regarding the 6R80 transmission fluid change, but none show with finger the levels, so it was hard to understand. You pin pointed with your finger the actual levels on the dip stick, which makes the viewer understand better, thanks for that.
I had a question though, Total how many Quarts of Fluid did you put in all to measure it till level B with temperature hot ?

Also what was the temperature at which you got the fluid to B marking ? I tried searching many places, but didn't find any answer.
I would appreciate if you could help with these questions. Thanks.

Been there, no lift, definitely burned my wrist, sweated out about 10lbs. Was never satisfied with how the level was on the dipstick, so I took it to a shop a short while later for a other pan drop and filter change. Never again with that thing!

Here is another tip. When replacing the filter clean the hole in the transmission with a shot of brake clean so there is no oil and the rubber ring has a better grip. Then use green Lube Gard assemblee goo on the contact points of the filter to the valve body. This will hold the filter in place until you can get the pan on. Put the assemnlee goo in the refrigerator for a few hours to make it extra sticky. This product is made to be used in automatic transmissions and will dissolve in transmission fluid. For some reason Ford could not put a screw in the filter to hold it in place. They probably saved 15 cents per transmission by doing this.😑

I still think removing the trans line and allowing it to pump out is worthwhile... It was able to pump out a little less than 4 quarts...

Also here is a tip if you are not into transmission fluid waterfalls. Drill a 1/4-inch hole in the bottom of the pan first, then remove the dipstick, and let the fluid drain out into a pan for an hour or two. Then remove the pan, replace the filter, clean the pan and magnet. Plug the hole you drilled with JB weld, let it set up and replace the pan. Refill with the same amount of fluid you drained out. A cleaner job without all the mess.😊
