As to the "trick..."

In Luke 24:28, Jesus "pretended" (check the Greek) He would go farther, leading the disciples to invite Him to stay.

In 1 Corinthians 9:22, Paul says he becomes different around different kinds of people so that he might "by all means save some."

In Genesis 18, the Lord speaks to His angels, intending for Abraham to overhear, again, leading Abraham to approach Him in intercession. There is a kind of cleverness here, as in Luke, but it is always done gently by the Lord, in love.

I believe Ray's action was similar.
