What's the point of model railways? - Enjoyment

I like that Sandi was visibly annoyed at the guests not appreciating model railways.

Model railways when done properly are beautiful. So much effort and time put into them.

I clicked on this video fully expecting the panellists to mock people who are: A) Wearers of anoraks. B) Male. C) Have too much time on their hands. And indeed, it looked like it may have headed in that direction if Sandi hadn't immediately stopped them in their tracks (lol) by aligning herself with model rail enthusiasts. Well done, Sandi! Although this hobby has always been too expensive and required too much skill that I sadly don't possess, I have always been very respectful and appreciative of the time, effort, and talent involved in making a model railway. Well done QI for not mocking a hobby that is arguably far more deserving of respect than some!

A man spends 26 years of his spare time to hand craft buildings for his epic model train set. And those women expect men to believe they're _not_ impressed by that? Ha!

Rod Stewart is a decent guy. He was very upset and donated a sizeable sum of money to Market Deeping Model Railway club when their exhibition was trashed by drunken youths.

Can't say I've ever really been a fan of Rod Stewart, but after seeing only a tiny part of his creativity and dedication I have a new found respect for him ! Nice one Rod.

I approve of Sandi's Skirting Board Valley line.

After COVID hit, TfL and a few other UK rail companies started training on digitial models due to the travel concerns.
I worked on developing the software they used and I have to be honest; we somehow have one of the cleverest and yet most complicated systems in the world for signal managing.

Thank you Sandi for appreciating the time and effort that goes into the model railway hobby. PS I use the hobby as a way of de stressing and making my entail health better!

My attitude is that, like other hobbies, if it makes the individual happy and they’re not hurting others, what’s wrong with it?

It's an art, just like painting or music. It takes skill and patience to do right

I feel bad for people who don't like model trains. What a miserable existence that must be.

Basically the main “point” to model railways is to keep a man’s sanity from annoying Women like these 🤦‍♂️

The Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway Signalling School model is at the NRM York, Restored to working condition it is still used today (though not as a training tool). Incidentally, the original L&YR Cup awarded to the top student of each class was found a few years ago, and is again presented to the top student as they through the modern version of the signalling school.

I love model railways. Just wish it wasn't so ruddy expensive.

Wow Sandi has just gone up in my estimations! Really didn't expect her to understand or appreciate model railways - The attitude of the other two women was much more what I was expecting. It may not be a "cool" hobby but it certainly requires skill and discipline (and deep pockets!)

I am afraid I never developed a need to knit or crouchet but I don't deride people that do beats sitting in a pub

Model Railroading is an all encompassing hobby. Carpenter, painter, electrician, artist, etc. Do these women mock needlework or crocheting or knitting. These are all crafts that I can’t do but I admire them. Those two women are why men don’t like to share their hobbies. Women who mock or downplay others are too toxic to be around.

Neil Young has multiple patents to do with model railroading... Elton John, Jools Holland, Frank Sinatra, Roger Daltrey, Bruce Springsteen, Eric Clapton, Phil Collins and Ringo Starr are all examples of famous musicians that were also model railroad enthusiasts.
