And 41 years later, the memory of my own one-on-one interview with Ronnie at the Sebel in Sydney (Nov 1980) still resonates vividly. He was far less diplomatic about his departure from Rainbow, but this next great love at its beginning was all he was really concerned with. And, despite decades in between, that great love never died, and it gave us Mob Rules, Dehumanizer & The Devil You Know. The 3 Sydney shows I saw were amongst the best sounding shows I'd ever witnessed. And the band was on fire. The new songs were amazing, but the classic songs also had a new life. My last encounter with Ronnie was in Auckland NZ in Aug 2007. I'd just seen this amazing band (as Heaven+Hell) blow the roof off the venue. Ronnie, at 65, had just kicked the ass of every 30 y/o in the building! The joy on his face! And his voice was never better! Catching up at the hotel afterwards, upon seeing me, his face lit up & the big hug. We hadn't seen each other in 20 years but we resumed like no time had passed. He was like that. RIP Ronnie.

I don't think many people remember what a shock it was when Bill Ward left the band mid-tour in 1980. I myself was so excited to see him on drums only to find someone else (Vinnie of course) was on the drums this tour. It was disheartening. It was enough to acclimate RJD as Black Sabbath's singer and then Bill was gone and replaced by someone nobody ever heard of.

Thanks for posting! If you have a second, we uploaded an Eddie Van Halen tribute video. As fellow music lovers, we'd love if you'd check it out. It's on our page. Don't go too hard on us :)
