I'm honestly surprised that defeating scal before exo mech isnt the main way people do it

I personally struggle much more with exo mechs than scal bc of the chaos of it all

That book is S tier if you fight Calamitas first. Easely outdamages and carries you through everything on the map, including exo mechs. It is also helped by the fact that you can place enchantment whitch ups its damage even higher, but makes it damage you for 5 hp on a cast randomly, instead of taking mana. This enchant is bugged on channeling weapons howether, and you could only get damaged for the first tick of the spell. Whitch means what? Yup. Free damage. This thing is 20-30% stronger than ANY mage weapon at this point, AND its homing. The only scenario it isnt ideal, is AOE. But it still could be useful there.

heresy is actually crazy good against the exo mechs (yes it is pretty easy to fight calamitas before fighting them, i did it on my first playthrough of calamity)
