Biggest Black Hole Ever Discovered | COSMOS in a minute #39

The biggest black hole ever discovered in the universe is Phoenix A* (A star), located at the centre of the Phoenix cluster about 5.8 billion light years away. It’s so big that it can fit a mass of 100 billion Suns inside it. Also, the black hole’s event horizon, the point of no return beyond which even light cannot escape, is about 100 times the distance from the Sun to Pluto. To put that into perspective, if the Sun were the size of a pea, Phoenix A* would be the size of a football stadium, making it almost 1.5 times bigger than TON-618, the previous record holder. Scientists propose that such black holes should be placed in the category of Stupendously Large Black Holes or SLABS, which may have been seeded by primordial black holes that formed within a second after the big bang.

Stupendously large blackholes is a very good name. Literally

Imagine the amount of data that the black hole has.

Fun fact: If you could somehow, go into the phoenix A and spend 10 minutes. You would find that around 1.8m years had elapsed in the outside universe.

And it's 5.8 billion light years away?? Just imagine how big it could be now..

The football stadium reference blew my mind and that’s not easy to do with space facts I’ve become a little desensitized to large numbers because of astrophysics

The power that i hold by changing the likes in this video from 9, 999 to 10, 000 is amazing 💀

The fact that we are seeing how it was 6 billion years ago means it could be even bigger

Black holes in that size, are proof that our universe is way way older then we ever could think was possible.
The amount of stars and galaxies is proof number 1.

I always wondered What a the black hole is made out of? After all that mass is crushed to such an extreme level what did it become?
If you could stop gravity in the universe so the blackhole doesnt eat you, and you touch the surface of the black hole what would it feel like, I can only imagine it's extremely strong material because its so dense

I believe Ultramassive was another name for black holes of this size. They're also of a class large enough to produce the single most high energy events in the universe: Quasars
