My observations are (latitude 35): 1st year seedling likes shade so perhaps put tomato basket over it & wrap a bit of shade cloth, 2nd year leaves seem sun proof so uncover them. It make take 17-20 years to mature & start making acorns; which are fun to look at being the biggest I know of, hairy & have a big scalloped cap (the MacroCarpa part of it's name), mild enough for food with a bit of soaking wildlife like big sweet nuts. If planted in a pasture with a horses & snow, the horse may eat all the bark off the tree. Give it some room if you plan to keep it 200 years - they get big eventually.
