I show you how I remove the caps or hats off of Bur Oak acorns. These are Bur Oak acorns that I will plant in the spring, I also show how to float test the Bur Oak acorns to see if the are viable seeds and how to store them for stratification of the acorns.

Here are the Amazon Links to some of the items I used

Have you tried soaking them and leaching the tannins out and eating them? They aren’t bad!

I collected a bunch of them from my 2 burr oaks. The greener ones I collected last month were much better than the ones I collected last week. These latest ones were dried out and all but one floated. I got pretty good at judging which ones to remove the cap by the weight or a rattle inside. I cut open a bunch of the light and hollow ones and found worms in most of them. Then again I live close to Houston rather than Dallas so maybe that has something to do with the collection time. I have the good ones in the refrigerator now. Thanks for the videos!

Will they still grow if you leave the caps on ?

i used a knife and just slid it under like you did and removed small pieces.. Afterwards, I thought I should have covered everything but the tip with duct tape. Thanks for the videos. I have wondered if the differences in tops could be due to hybrids. What do you think?

An easier way is to lay the nut on its side and turn it as you rap it firmly (not too hard) with a heavy hammer all the way around until you see some cracking around the rim. Wet or dry, this works well and loosens the acorn from the cap and you can pull it off with your hands until the acorn pops out. No need for pinchy pliers or dangerous screwdrivers.

I have them floating straight from the tree. Vrazy. However i have gotten trees from floaters.

To plant do you need to take cap off ? And how is the best way to plant them ?

How about just soak for 24hrs? I found it’s way easier. Almost dissolves after 24hrs
