I love your channel so much! Just discovered you recently and it's so awesome to see you care for these old computers and speak so fondly of them. I would kill to have my old Windows 98 PC back from my childhood. I remember installing my first new stick of RAM (128 MB xD) and graphics card. I went from like 10 fps playing Half-Life to 60+ and it BLEW MY MIND haha. Thanks for your channel!! Absolutely love it.

These were $1800 back in 2008, and for the price they did not age well. The Late 2008 / Mid 2009 with an SSD is slightly more usable, but still limited by the soldered 2 GB RAM and prone to Northbridge failure.

Mistake or not, still great to see those old laptops restored. I've been doing the same on an old Sony Vaio of mine from 2005, installing a current Linux 32 bit distro on it, alongside Windows XP

Suggestion: Nuke MacOS and install Linux. I recommend Elementary OS and the Air will fly.

Just wanted to say thank you to you and Luke for the advice on this. I just bought a early 2008 MBA, which i was having issues with the processor overheating.. I watched your video and was so thankful you suggested about the thermal paste.. problem solved. I have just started a youtube channel with my friends and this is purely just going to be a laptop to take around for making notes etc whilst on the go. Keep up the great work!

I like watching you giving old Hardware a second Chance. I do the same as a hobby for over 10years now and most of the time Laptops and it surprises me every time how well most of them are usefull still today. Only cleaning the coolers, new thermalpaste and an cheap SSD. The only thing that suxxs is how hard it gets over the years to get to the components. Old alienware just remove 4 screws and you can reach everything, Last week a Toshiba from 2014 remove 16screws...turn around 8 screws...take out Keyboard...disconnect hundrets of these thin flat cables....Horror.

The most satisfying part to watch is when you start disassembling parts, cleaning, and reassembling them 😁

Been building high end systems since the 90s, since even before CPUs needed heat sinks. I have always applied thermal paste in the way you showed, and my thermals have always been great. The whole (non-conductive) thermal paste application debate simply needs to end. Unless you're delidding and using liquid metal, pretty much any application method works as well as another. Put too little on and, yes you have a problem. Put too much on and you'll have a mess, but your thermals will still be fine. Err on the side of slightly too much and get on with your life. 🙂

Just a tip You do not need to spread the thermal paste that causes bubbles leave a small drop and the heat sink will disperse the paste itself

I'm really surprised the hinges are still good on these, they were a flawed design. Unless they've already been replaced but I don't think so. Apple official replacements were black but your machine looks to have original silver hinges. I'd be careful because when the hinges fail they often damage the case.

Also, try running Win7 or some other system and see if it runs any better, I bet it will.
