Two DIY RV Tips I Wish I Knew Sooner!

Today I wanted to share a couple of tips. The tips are from Jason at "How To RV"
I wanted to share these because I was talking to Jason about a mod he had done on his 30 amp RV and I thought it was a great idea for those with 50 amp RVs as well. It should help you take care of your RV Electrical and give you the information to stop tripping the 30 amp breaker in the RV or at the campground. If you would like to check out his channel you can find it here.

My Hughes Power Watchdog surge protector app shows me the loads on each leg of the 50A and will also keep track of total power used. Very handy and with it hardwired in it is always there.

Thank you Jarred for the shout out. I have had the filter for a couple of years now and love it. I guess I need to put something out talking about how it has held up so far.

You’re my favorite channel for DIY and “cool stuff” for RV’s!!

Be aware that installing on the neurtal will monitor the total current draw of the RV when the 2 legs are connected to the same leg of a 120V/30A. So it gets you what you want. But when you're on a 240V/50A connection, the readings will be meaningless since the neutral only carries balance current in a 240V system.

Very cool. Referencing someone else’s tips and your mods shows great humility and willingness to learn. Then pass along.
Thanks!

I've had the power monitor mounted on our 30 amp trailer a few years. Very enlightening. We now run the water heater on gas during a/c season

I appreciate this information as I plan to enter the RVing Universe with a Class B in the future.

Yep my watchdog same thing. I have a tablet mounted to the wall running the app and the watch dog gives me all that info.

Just ordered the filter kit and other stuff using your link. Thanks for the great information. The filter kit was extremely affordable for the quality!

Came to give thanks! I wanted to say thank you for all your helpful info on RV's because I wish I had your teachings and knowledge when I bought my EPro. Now that it's sold I am planning on getting something bigger and I, again, thank you for everything you are posting.

Surge Guard ems has a bluetooth add on that you can mount inside the rig that showss you the same thing. I have one and it shows voltage, amps and cycle. But it's about 4 bills for both but as a mobile rv tech, I figured why cheap out on something that can reduce headaches when I travel.

Hi Jarred.
I am a 64 year old solo full-time RVer for about 20 years now. I just had to hop in the comments to say I Rarely understand anything you share with us.
I have no Solar, and wish I could finally know the difference of an inverter and a converter!!😁
Happy Trails🚍

Microns refers to particle size that the unit filters out. 5 microns is approx (.2) thousandths of an inch.

Great idea for the power monitor. I have just bought a new destination trailer and am living in a 30 amp site. Previous trailer was 30 so it didn't matter but now I'll have to watch it until I get used to it so I don't over draw

I imagine the filters would get pretty moldy if not used regularly? We don't often have water hookups.

The 2018 Jayco Alante we purchased last fall has an energy monitoring system built in that monitors the power and turns off the 2 AC’s and other appliances when it needs to. It also shows the amp draws on the system. This is a 30 amp system. I did install a battery monitor like you showed in earlier videos. It works great! Respectfully, Kevin

Putting the monitor on the neutral will only work right if the trailer is plugged into a 30 amp circuit. If you have the monitor on the neutral conductor plugged into a 50 amp service, it will only show the unbalanced load. For example, if one leg draws 22 amps and the other leg draws 6 amps, the neutral wire will only carry the difference, i.e.16 amps (22a - 6a = 16a. ) That's the way it works with 2 hot legs and a neutral. A 30 amp service neutral will give the same amp reading on the neutral as it does on the hot leg.

Help, lol. I am converting to lithium ion and have heard it mentioned many times that you can put those batteries inside along with the converter/inverter/charger but I’m still concerned about the heat generated and no one is giving any real data on it. If you have an opportunity can you do that in a video? I have a toy hauler so my storage is very limited and wanted to put my new electric system under my bed area so I need to know what kind of heat could be potential coming off of these components. Thank you and I love your channel.
