In fact, the author said his study did not mean there is no free will. That is a wrong extrapollation.
The choices we make are constructed in our unconscius mind, bit by bit, then the uncounsciuos mind deliveres its answers to the conscious mind and then, we are aware of our decision. This is the natural process of constructing our thoughts. The unconscious mind is not a magical or alien entity, it's part of ourselves and particular to each one of us. The awareness is only a small fraction of our brain. This simple exercise will be a good example: Try to remember the name of a person you know but you don't quite well remember... After a few seconds or a small fraction of time, the answer comes to you. That is the time it took to pass from the unconscius level the conscious one.

You can't really prove nor falsify that free will, which is pretty much metaphysical, exists or not.
I know this study and even the author have mentioned that it is not a scientific prove that free will doesn't exist. I see it like this: believing in free will is up to you. I think, believing in free will helps a lot of people with getting out of the victim mentality and really experience self-efficacy. In my life, the question of free will literally doesn't play a role, because I know a thing or two about habits, socialisation, the impact of your childhood etc. I know that I have predispositions and that I am not in control of my surroundings (like other people). But I know that I'm in control of what I'm making out of this and that's what's important. Become who you are.

If there is free will, its not the free will of the conscious me, which just observes, but the free will of the mind, which is observed by the conscious me. But the mind is not free from context and past experiences, so it's not free in any means of 'freedom to do everything', but to decide freely in very closely set boundaries und values

There is causation to literally everything. This is just a redefinition of the concept of “free.” If thought/will isn’t free, then by the same metric, what is? It would seem to me that by that standard for what is considered “free” or not, that literally nothing in the conceivable universe is free.

Yeah i always had mixed feelings on that, i’ve always found the idea of free will such a joke but like we still are in control of our lives, we’re just animals.

we are limited in what we can do but that’s not so bad, we are capable of amazing features and we can always become better versions of ourselves if we try.

Things are just very difficult because of our limitations as a species.

I think its so cool how our world is though our brains are so complex and fascinating. I love how interesting our world is

Not only is free will an illusion, but the illusion of free will is an illusion. You don't even need to try and prove anything scientifically; just pay close enough attention to your own subjective experience.

You are free to do what you will, you are not free to will what you will. Schopenhauer said something like that. Each person has a will, it is what drives their life. That will is a product of a chain of cause and effect which stretches backward on and on, prior even to your own conception. Having accepted that, the two main reactions are: compatibalism, or, hard determinism.

This resembles a philosophical problem I tackled at my first year of university: you can either conclude that everything can be deducted from biological (and then chemical, so physical) reactions, and therefore admit there is no conscience (and, in this case, free will), bc that, like idk, the soul, is something that seems to escape physics' laws, or conclude that there is a conscience, and therefore admit free will: those reactions for which you used your left hand aren't just physical and biological, but also come from conscience

It is easy to find situations where our free will is partially limited. It does not imply that there would not be a thing called free will. An analogy: If it is raining heavily and it is storming, an umbrella will not do a good job, especially if left at home. A thing called umbrella is still a real thing, not an illusion. It serves a purpose even if it is not always perfect.

I've heard of this before and it's really fascinating. But how is it then that we can decide to not give into our (worst) impulses? I mean to certain degree we can control ourselves can't we? Or is this just conditioning from role models?

We can choose, but that is certainly not the same as a mirage-like 'free will'.

Having precedent events that show which outcome will occur does not exclude a free volition. Kind of like how an exceptionally accurate weather man may predict but not cause the weather.

While I understand the point being made, that doesn't necessarily rule out free will.. It only rules out the most common concept of free will involving our consciousness!

A lot of behavior could probably be predicted (in theory), if you just have all the informations to do it.

But the thing is... it doesn't matter, since it changes nothing in your life.

I think the true "You" is an observer who can just percive your own thoughts, emotions and his surroundings, without evaluating anything.

As the body you have no free will, because you are not the body.

I am reading Sapolsky at the moment and this was one of the first things je mentioned when he started dismantling the illusion of free will. ❤
