I taught myself how to use chopsticks when I started eating sushi. It took some getting used to, but I enjoyed learning. I still have trouble with slippery noodles when I eat stuff like ramen, but chopsticks are fun. I recommend everybody who wants to learn have patience. It will get easier!

I was taught when I was in Jr High. I got a job at a Japanese grocery store and had meals at my bosses house from time to time. He showed me how to use chopsticks and I felt proud when I got the hang of it. I Picked up the last grains of rice because he said it was wasteful to leave one behind and that with one grain you can grow more until you have fields of rice. But once cooked, you can't do that. I wanted to finish it all because it was delicious and thanked his wife. I didn't know there was so many kinds of rice too. I was proud to show my daughter and told her that story. She beamed at me and showed how proud she was of a new accomplishment. Now she is teaching her son who is 3 years old and telling him the story that was told to me. Every time I pick up chop sticks, I think of my boss who is long since passed, and retell the story so my children and grandchildren don't forget. Maybe someday, they will pick up chop sticks and think of me. I am happy to see your video. Please continue to make more. Thank you.

Hi Emmy.

For those of us who are hard of hearing/deaf could you please add subtitles to your videos? It makes it much more accessible... As a long standing viewer with rapidly worsening hearing issues I wish for this to become a possibility before I completely lose my hearing and am unable to watch these any more. Thank you.

I'm not sure if there are any other East/Southeast Asian countries that do this, but as far as I know, the Philippines is a country whose cuisine doesn't normally utilize chopsticks for eating. It's either a fork and spoon, or your hands. Therefore, I didn't grow up using chopsticks, so I had to stare in awe at my friends (Asian or non-Asian) and wonder, "How the heck are you doing that so easily?!" -_- But I've been getting the hang of it over the last few years. I had dug up my old and only pair of Japanese chopsticks that I got when I was a kid, but never bothered learning how to use until now. :P I seem to like Japanese chopsticks the most as I like the pointed design and it's easier to pick food up. It's gonna take me extra practice to learn how eat with the square Chinese chopsticks lol.

For anyone wondering why people would 'torture' themselves trying to eat certain foods with chopsticks when forks or spoons seem so much better - it's not always about the quickest way to get your food from point A to point B. Some people might use chopsticks because it reminds them of their heritage, or out of respect for the culture. I mostly only use chopsticks when they are provided at restaurants because that means the food they have prepared is designed to be eaten with them, so I figure I'm not getting the full experience unless I use them. Simple as that.

Chopsticks are definitely a part of my life. I'm German but I always loved chopsticks. A few years ago I started practicing because I had ordered 3 different sets on the internet and wanted to learn it. I have 2 Japanese sets (the chopsticks in one set are super pointy because I wanted them, the other Japanese set looks like the ones in your video) and 1 set of Korean steel chopsticks.
I had so smile when you talked about pracitcing because I did exactly that. I ate everything with chopsticks. Even nuts, corn and peas. :D
It took me just a few months to become really good at it. I just love using them!!! ♥
for me, as a European who grew up using fork and knife, eating with chopsticks is almost like being allowed to play with the food (which is a no-go). But with chopsticks it's much more fun.

I hold my chopsticks very differently, but i can still use them to hold things. Is it seen as insulting or frowned upon if you hold them differently?

Can everybody just STOP bragging about how old they were when they started using chopsticks, or "aw man, ya know chopsticks are soo easy bro, " or "yeah i use chopstick for rice and stuff every day"

Like SERIOUSLY. NOBODY. GIVES. A. FLUDGE. listen. Many, many, many people know how to use chopsticks. This video is a simple thing for humans who never learned or never saw a need for chopsticks. This video is NOT for people to come in and say whether or not they know how to use chopsticks, otherwise it would SAY: "comment down if YOU knew how to hold a chopstick"
