How Do I Complete the OCR A Level Computer Science NEA?

Показать описание
A video going through the key areas of the programming project that students studying OCR A level Computer Science will have to complete for 20% of the course. Despite the relatively low weighting, the NEA is often the trickiest part to get your head around - partly because, since it's coursework, so much of it needs to come from your own independent work.

In the video I go through the following stages and parts of the NEA:
The OCR NEA 0:00
Picking a Project 4:54
Analysis 15:55
Design 40:58
Developing the Coded Solution 57:33
Evaluation 1:17:12
Top Tips 1:25:19

OCR's website also has exemplars, some of which you'll need to get via your teacher. You can probably find others yourself by hunting around if needed!

I got 65/70 in my project and i did 85% of it in 3 days, wouldn’t recommend it but it’s doable so don’t stress. The project is light

I'm not sure what the difference is between decomposing in design and requirements/success criteria in analysis? It feels like they are basically the same thing. Also, would you include usability features in the success criteria?

I have thought about two ideas so far, one is a scheduling algorithm where you input what you are doing in a day and it allocates the best time slots for you to do things in and the other is a chatroom or an imageboard like 4Chan. To be honest, I feel like the imageboard would be easier and more interesting however, I have heard that scheduling algorithms score highly usually so I think that it might be more logical to do that instead. What do you guys think?

Hello sir, I am starting A levels this year, and I want to stay ahead of the NEA so I don't have to stress about it as much later on. I want to make a platformer with quite complex map generation and am wondering what I would have to say the main ' problem' is that makes me want to do this project for my analysis? Thank you

Would a web based chat application be good enough? With features such as group chats, a video calling system and a login/signup shsrem

Referring to 8:30, would a 2D game with NPCs programmed by an algorithm e.g. A* suffice?

Should we aim to use harder programming concepts within our code, even if they’re not exactly the most efficient way to do it?

For the possible structure in the Analysis section, 4. how would I differentiate that researched problem from 2., to a paragraph of problem in 4. (if that all makes sense)

for videos do you have to upload on youtube. or can you have them in a folder. for example my screen recording videos of testing are stored in a folder and are named as a unique code (i.e PD1). Then when i mention the video testing in my NEA. i give the name code of the video that i am talking about. At the end, when i send my nea. can i also send the folder containing these videos?

Would a flashcard app be complex enough to get a high grade (e.g. the active recall, different flashcards types, etc)?

Hi Sir! I was wondering how to make sure you get the marks for the "identified and justified any further data to be used in the post-development phase" bullet point for the design section? I'm struggling to understand what to add to my project. Thank you, hope you are having a lovely week :-)

Hello Sir. I have a question. When making a game for an NEA project, the mark scheme wants you to add every detail of your progress, errors, testing etc. My concern is when you follow a tutorial and write the same code as the tutorial and sort of copy the game, will it still count towards your grade? I am experienced in coding but am trying to make a fairly complex game where I do need a tutorial to learn how to code some things. After finishing the tutorial, I plan to switch things up to my own ideas but during the process I will have to write in my report very similar to what is in the tutorial. What do you think of this? Is this okay?

When going through my course, i try to comment every line of code to show my understanding because i am actually learning. My worry is my game and my code will look too similar to the course im taking throughout my documentation

Hey at the end of the video you say that you know of people who got brought down a lot of marks because they followed a tutorial but how many marks was this? Was wondering if it's worth the risk as I'm aiming for a C grade (40)

Is there a specific high level language that we need to use? Because I'm learning java script in IT and im not sure if i could learn another one specifically for the NEA
