"I almost died in this cave before."

"That's crazy. We should all go."

starting a cave exploration at 3AM already feels bad enough

As sad as the outcome was, it’s fortunate for the families that one guy stayed outside or they may never have been found.

Wow. That 5th friend really followed his fight or flight correctly.

I feel like we gotta start naming caves with cuddly sounding stuff because it seems like the closer a cave’s name gets to “Satan’s Flesh Shredder” the more people it just ends up attracting.

“By ducking underwater and swimming through a short tunnel. . . “. I’m out. I’m so out. If crawling underground through a tiny hole isn’t sufficiently terrifying, you want me to submerge in a pool of water, in the hope I’ll find a place to surface? Um, HELL no. These folks and myself are clearly entirely different species.

I cannot imagine being the last guy...all your friends have left, you have felt no tugs, and you're running out of oxygen. Submerging in the ice water only to get blocked by the floating body of your friend who just went ahead of you. Knowing that the others are probably just ahead of him. This is horrifying...

As someone said in a Death Valley video, if some place is named "Death Whatever", it earned it.

I'm friends with Joe, the survivor in this story. I'm a fan of your channel, and as soon as you mentioned the date and Provo, Utah, I knew exactly which case it was. Thank you for reporting on these incidents with such care and respect. It means even more when you know the people involved, and your thoughtful approach really stands out.

A common saying is “Safety regulations are written in blood” and it seems it’s the same with spelunking and dangerous caves. The Nutty Putty cave incident haunts me whenever I come across a cave.

Any miner will tell you. One of the biggest dangers to underground workers is Black ( or Choke) Damp, or Carbon Dioxide (CO2), which kills by displacing the oxygen in the air, causing suffocation.

Looking at the graphic as the narrative began, I thought, Hang on, that's a giant plumbing trap. That compartment at the end has no way to venti--ohhh no.

Joseph seemed to have a real keen sense of the caves danger, he trusted his gut. Listening to instinct is not cowardice. If only more cavers in these stories had such intuition.

"I have been there once. I just barely made it. I almost drown."
Everyone else at the table
"Sounds great! Lets Go!!!"

I am glad I was a boring kid.
Maybe I don't have amazing stories but I didn't die in a cave either.

I stole this from another comment.
"The best thing about cave diving is that you don't have to do it."

"Once in a lifetime adventure" is aptly correct.

Did something similar once, some friends and I went exploring a local cave with zero equipment other than one flashlight and without notifying anyone of where we were going. We got lucky and made it out fine. It's watching these disaster videos that make me appreciate just how stupid we were, and how lucky we were to not become statistics.

I was friend group adjacent to all of this, really impacted the rest of the group. There was a band called Parralax that played every friday night but after this not so much. Thank you again for being so respectful in how you cover this story.

I was hiking with my brother and a friend 46 years ago, almost exactly. They decided to do some climbing and we ended up on a very steep face. No climbing gear, of course. Anyways they decided to continue to climb while I went to the side and said, “No way.” I’m afraid of heights which probably saved me. But they slipped, went over, and fell at least 30 feet — it was probably more like 40 — and slammed into a rock shelf below. They survived but only through luck after hospital stays. The doctors were sure my brother would die. But sometimes saying, “No way in Hell!” is the best strategy.

I don't understand why anyone would even consider doing this

I was wondering when you would cover this one. I took the last photo shown in this video. I've been a subscriber to this channel for a long time, so my heart skipped a beat when I opened Youtube and saw the video. I don't follow any other channels that make this kind of content, as I've always felt like yours was the best and provided the most accurate and straight forward depiction of what happened without having to make up details to embellish the story and make it scarier. I'm honored you found my blog post and pictures useful as a source, and thank you for referencing them in the description. You'd be surprised how many creators don't.
