This is why video games are so addicting to me. The reward I get from playing is that I get to keep playing. It's quite the cycle

Oh, yeah. Exactly! The only thing that ever seems to work for me is stress/pressure. No matter what, it just seems like I can't get anything done until the deadline is almost reached. Then suddenly I get a flurry of hyper-focused work and everything gets done in like an hour. It's SO frustrating! LOL

That's why I love challenges, completing one is a reward in itself

With ADHD we are very very logical beings a lot of sarcasm goes right over our heads because we think of a million possibilities of how it could be

The Finch App has helped tremendously with this aspect of ADHD for me :)

The most magical thing for me is when I can access external rewards that are *outside my control.* I used to be able to pressure myself to get through my evening routine so that I could watch the Daily Show (reward) on cable right at 10 pm (beyond my control). Now I don’t have cable and I can watch it on YT anytime, so it doesn’t help me keep to a schedule. It’s so helpful for us to have external structure that’s rewarding (if you do this on time, you get happy things!) instead of threatening (if you don’t do this on time, it will be bad).

this is such a core realization! I NEEED the cookie and from the dopamin rush I am then able to start working - and once I'm in working mode, a lot needs to happen to pull me out of that

Exactly!!! I found a workaround to that thought by thinking about how good it will be to finish the task and finally focus on something I do want to do (basically, rewarding myself with an engagint activity for the boring activity), but it doesn't always work

I am an AuDHD mom who is home school an AuDHD Teen... this is what we both do for our rewards system...

We have punch cards. He has a 10 punch card for each assignment he gets 1 punch. He can turn the card in for a video game card or save up 4 a video game.

Then he has a 20 punch card for gym class. And for every 20 punches, he gets a free fun day.

I am going to try to implement it for myself, but I need to find what my rewards are.

But it works great for him

Or like... "What if I don't want the cookie later?" It's such a battle 😂

This is something I had no idea I did until my son did it and I had no idea how to handle it at the time. Generational ADHD, fun times

THIS!! Everything I read says that an "ADHD Hack" is to reward yourself after doing stuff, to give yourself the dopamine hit. And I haven't been able to think of a reward "good enough" that I can't just have or get NOW.

That why you always have to go with the expensive option so guilt is there if you haven’t done anything (like a Starbucks, new furniture, or a gaming console, etc.) that’s how I passed 6th grade! Lol

I’m 40 and this is my entire life explained in 5 seconds. The reason why I’ve never done a difficult thing in my life. My brain tells me… Why would I take the hard path when the easy one is right there? And like you said,
Can’t argue with that logic. And so I fail at doing anything except the things I was aready doing.

Same. Also that video needs a cookie in your hand in the last second.^^
