Sounds right. I ask regular questions. Or interrupt to get her to elaborate or show interest. . But a thought provoking question or complaint ( but honest ) and really listening and remembering what is said . . She mentions her sister, you meet her two weeks later and ask how her sister is . . ( women like that ) .

I have been told . ( by platonic female friends) and girlfriends. . That when I'm with them or speaking with them, they get my complete attention or feel heard . ( I was assured that's a compliment) . Like most men are only half listening or waiting for his turn to talk.
