This is one of those recipes which sits high up on my list of comfort foods. My mums recipe which is easy to make, so delicious and will become your favourite too.

I made this today, I didn't change anything in your recipe. This was amazing! Honestly Chetna I've tried about 4 of your recipes and I'm happy to report that I've never been disappointed

chicken marinade:

1 whole chicken w/ bones, chopped into pieces
150g natural yogurt
2 large garlic gloves
1 inch ginger
1 tsp salt
1 tsp turmeric
1 tsp garam masala
combined spices and yogurt
marinate chicken at least 20 minutes, but preferably overnight

sauce:

heat 2-3 tbsp oil
roughly chop 3 med onion
add 1 tbsp cumin seed
cook until golden brown

add 2 garlic cloves grated
add 1 inch ginger grated
mix & cook 2 minutes

add 4 tomatoes roughly chop (or 400gm canned diced tomatoes)
add 2tbsp tomato puree
cover cook low heat 15-20 minutes

add 1/2 tsp salt, 1/2 tsp turmeric, 1 tsp garam masala, 1 tsp chili, 1 tbsp ground coriander
mix 4-5 min on medium heat

add chicken, mix well
add 150ml water
mix, cover, cook on low-med heat for 40-45 minutes
turn after 15 minutes to avoid sticking to bottom

turn heat off, let rest for 5 minutes
garnish with fresh coriander

And - can I say - I love how you enjoy your food. Some chefs and home cooks on YT seem like they are putting on a show and would never eat their own meals! But you are so genuine and authentic. Thank you for sharing!

I usually make Gujarati food, but wanted something like a Bengali/Pakistani chicken curry. This was amazing, I added chickpeas, spinach and green chillies and everyone loved it! The chicken was so soft and had 3 levels of flavour, the chicken, the spice and the yoghurt. Will definitely be making this again!

Hello! I finally gave it a shot following your recipe, and it turned out AMAZING! I didn’t use a whole chicken though. I had some bone in chicken thighs and just took the skin off and used those.
I was wondering, what would I use to up the heat on this? My boyfriend likes his curry HOT.

Just made this curry. It is absolutely delicious. Thank you to Ian Dunn below who has so kindly set out the recipe. Re the sauce, Ian has recorded 1 tbsp of cumin seeds whereas listening to Chetna, it seems 1 tsp will do. Whatever, I am so chuffed with myself for having made this curry. I used 1 heaped tsp of "hot" chilli powder which left my mouth zinging a half an hour after wolfing a bowl of it down. The fragrance of all the spices now permeate my flat. Thank you, Chetna for such a delicious recipe.

Hi Chetna, I also tried this today and it was delicious! I added cauliflower and chillies (maybe not enough, it was quite mild) but the flavour was delicious. I used chicken thighs too because it was easy. Thank you!
