The "Russian blue cat" breed has Russian roots, but foreign breeders carried out all the breeding work to fix the standard traits. The birthplace of the Russian blue cats is the northern regions of Russia. These cats were known at the court of the Russian tsars, but in the typical population, these cats are always listed as favorites.

Animals belonging to the "Russian blue cat" species were often members of the crews of seagoing ships with their own duties, the main one being the extermination of rodents. Many shipboard cats became not only sea voyagers, but also settlers, who got to the distant from their native places and very soon became legal residents there.

Russian cats with gray-blue short hair color got to the British Isles thanks to sailors of Russian Empire ships going from Arkhangelsk to England, where the local population took a liking to them. There they were called "blue archangels". The Englishwoman Carew Cox was the first breeder of Russian blue cats in the late 19th century. In 1903 the breed was named Archangel Blue. In 1935 the breed was registered in the British studbook as Russian Blue.

American breeders began breeding Russian blue cats in the 50s of the twentieth century. Therefore, there are several standards defining the requirements for this breed. They are stipulated in the documents of European and American felinological (studying cats) organizations. Today European, Scandinavian, English, and North American types of breeds are fixed.

Animals of this breed have retained many natural instincts, so hunting is a necessity for them. Cats are happy to chase toys tied to strings, roll balls, and chase moving toy mice. The best habitat for animals would be a house with a homestead, where they can hunt for live rodents. But even in an apartment, they feel good if the owners regularly take them out for walks, pre-wearing a leash.

We just found ours 6 months ago. He literally appeared out of the woods . At first he would just watch my husband feed the birds every morning. After about 2 months he would finally let my husband pet him, then me. Then one day we woke up and he was sleeping on my chair on our deck. I got my Russian Blue Zukoff, several months ago. He's about a year old. He is wonderful. He is the best cat I have ever owned. So loving and inquisitive. Loves his tree and sleeps as close to me as he can get.

Love my Russian Blue Kip! He is like no other cat I have ever special in so many ways. Like having another person in my house. I saved him from a previous owner wanted him put to sleep because behavioral problems. Other large animals and small children in the house. I guess just too much for him to deal with. I worked through many issues with it has been worth it for sure.

My mom had a Russian blue that was really mean, only like my mother, would scratch or bite anyone else that tried to pet him. I used to call him Rasputin. He was really pretty.

My wife and I owned 2 a mother and her daughter Super intelligent to the point that they urinated in our toilet after watching my wife Cut down a lot on purchase of kitty litter as no odor
They loved to sleep on the foot of our bed and on the dot of 7 am would wake us up for breakfast Strongly recommend !

Really I had a Russian husband best husband in the world passed away with diabetes and dialysis do you have a cat I’d be very proud there was Russian kind smart and tough those are good traits to know

My mom wanted me to catch a cat that had strayed to her house. He came right up to me and I put him in a carrier and never made a fuss during the four hour ride home. We decided to keep him and he is everything you could want in a cat.A friend of mine seen a picture I took and she told me that he looked like a Russian Blue. He has made himself at home.
