When Amped Atelier gets her lacing guide rulers back in stock, run do not walk and get one of those puppies!! They're so great for marking eyelet placement!

This is a comment after watching your video on why the Peacock dress should not be made. I am a white woman of privilege pure and simple. When I was in college, I had the opportunity to study abroad for a year.

In WASPy language it is referred to as the "Junior year abroad." There were many programs offered. Realizing that I could travel in Europe fairly easily, I chose the India Studies Program. I spent a year living with an Indian family in Pune, Maharashtra. After my program of study was over, I traveled by train throughout Northern India. At the time, I was able to travel to Kashmir and Ladakh. I did not have the money to travel in other than the 3rd class.

My eyes were opened. In truth, they were ripped open. At the Puna train station there was a man who had a shirt but no pants or dothi. He wore what he had. I bought a dothi for him, but my Indian friends would not let me give it to him directly. I asked why, and they said it would be unsafe for me to do so. I didn't understand, but I insisted that he be given the dothi. I was outraged that nothing had been done for this man. One of my friends told me to open my eyes and look around me. With deep sadness, he pointed out the scale of the problem simply by waving his hand. I was still outraged, but my eyes were beginning to open.

I saw grinding poverty everywhere. At first, that was all I saw. Here in the US we at least pretend to help with homeless shelters and soup kitchens. In India, having nothing literally means having nothing.

And then I saw beauty. I heard devotional hymns being sung outside of cardboard homes. I met a man, who clearly supported himself begging, bringing a hibiscus blossom to the the temple. I mentioned how beautiful it was and said it must smell lovely. He told me that he would not smell the blossom until he had offered it to Shiva. As I traveled, I was offered food and hospitality by those who could not spare the food and who gave me the best sleeping place in their one room home.

I saw that here, in the US, we might have material wealth, but we lack spiritual wealth. We equate our dignity and self respect with our material possessions. I had to travel to India to learn the meaning of "dignity."

My ignorance was such that I didn't know how ignorant I was. And. yet, for the most part, I was shown kindness and understanding. Since I was sincere in my wish to learn, people took the time to teach me.

When I saw the peacock dress, I was dazzled by its beauty. Then I learned for whom and what it had been made for. Having suffered bloody fingers and cramped hands trying to learn that type of embroidery, I thought of the people who had done the embroidery. I traveled to India about 32 years after it had gained its independence. I saw the working and living conditions of those at the bottom level of the financial ladder, and it must have been much worse when the dress was made.

One of my dearest friends was born under British rule.

Thank you for your video.

Your hands are lovely. I love your nails and henna. I am also ill right now and am concerned that I started writing it as the Arabic word and then confused it with another Arabic word. I am so glad you said henna, because I forgot what the word was.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who has issues with their aglets being too big...though I have never tried biting them 🤔🤣

My 18th c stays have the same shoulder strap treatment. Love it!! I wear them as "fashion" stays on occasion, and I don't think it looks bad. Mine are dyed the same color as my binding, so they aren't quite as bright white and "obvious." You could Rit those babies if you wanted. Or if they're cotton, Dharma Trading makes a fiber reactive dye that's exactly the color of your pink ribbon.
